Best Value Redemptions for American Airline Miles

When it comes to booking free award travel, few airlines offer a loyalty program on par with American Airlines. And it's not only because AA miles are so easy to redeem; it's because they are so easy to earn as well.

Citi Platinum AAdvantage World MasterCard

Most people begin their relationship with American Airlines by signing up for a co-branded rewards credit card like the Citi Platinum AAdvantage World MasterCard. The deal is this: Spend $1,000 on the card with 90 days of account opening and earn 30,000 bonus American Airline miles. Some other perks that come with the card:

  • Earn 1 mile/$1 spent on all purchases
  • Earn 2 miles/$1 spent with American Airlines
  • Free checked bags for up to four travel companions
  • Group 1 Boarding
  • 25% off all in-flight purchases
  • $95 annual fee waived the first year

So signing up for the card should easily net you 31,000 American Airline miles, and a family with two point-earners could count on earning 62,000 miles. Earning those points sounds easy because it is easy, but where will they take you?

Flying with American Airlines

American Airlines is one of the most versatile airlines to travel with because they fly nearly anywhere. Want to fly within the continental U.S. or Canada? You can. Dreaming of a trip to the Caribbean? They can take you there. Want to see Europe? You got it.

You simply need to earn enough miles to make your trip happen, and the easiest way to do that is by signing up for a card like the Citi Platinum AAdvantage World MasterCard. The following chart details how many miles it takes to visit some of the most popular destinations in the world:

Off-peak Dates

Miles Required

January 12 - March 13 and August 22 - December 15

Caribbean and Mexico

September 7 - November 14

Central America, Columbia, Peru, Ecuador, and Veneuela

January 16 – June 14; September 7 – November 14

Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay

March 1 – May 31; August 16 – November 30

October 1 - April 30

October 15 - May 15

American Airlines Sweet Spots

As you can see, there is plenty of value to be found in American Airline's redemption chart. For example, a round-trip flight from the U.S. to the Caribbean costs only 25,000 American Airline miles in September, October, and part of November. Likewise, a round-trip flight to Central America can cost as little as 30,000 American Airline miles during the off-peak season. And a trip to Hawaii can cost as little as 35,000 miles round-trip, which should be easily attainable if you earn the bonus from the Citi Platinum AAdvantage World MasterCard and use the card for regular spending.

However, the best value offered by American Airlines is in its round-trip flights from the U.S. to Europe. As you can see, it takes only 20,000 AA miles to fly from the U.S. to Europe for more than half of the year- from October 15th-May 15th. That means that, with a bank of 40,000 AA miles, an individual could fly round-trip to Europe while only paying for any government-mandated taxes and fees for their flight. And since round-trip flights to Europe can easily cost $1,500 or more, this is one of the best travel reward bargains out there.

The bottom line is this: The loyalty program offered by American Airlines is a no-brainer for anyone who wants a free flight to nearly anywhere in the world. Signing up for the Citi Platinum AAdvantage World MasterCard is all it takes to get started. What are you waiting for?
