Do I Need a Home Monitoring System?

You and your family could benefit from a home monitoring service regardless of your neighborhood, as well as your house or apartment size. You get the peace of mind that comes from knowing you're protected, what with over 2 million home burglaries per year in the United States. An up to date system also protects against other common hazards such as gas leaks, smoke, fire, medical alerts and carbon monoxide.

The FBI and Burglars

Most U.S. Homes do not have a home monitoring system installed, yet statistics suggest that the presence of such a system effects the instance of burglary. According to the FBI, up to one third of all homes will suffer a burglary attempt at some point, compared to 1 out of 250 with a home monitoring service. Further, the FBI reports that for 2011, there were 2,188,005 burglaries, an increase of .9% from the previous year. Happily, current FBI figures show a modest decrease in property crimes, yet the threat of home invasion still looms. The Electronic Security Association reports that 90% of burglars state that knowledge of a home security system would deter an attempted burglary of a home.

Do I Need a Home Monitoring System?

Home Monitoring 101

Today's state of the art home monitoring systems work on wireless technology. Some systems rely on landline or cellular technology. There are other home monitoring companies combining wireless, landline and cellular for truly comprehensive monitoring of a range of threats.

With a wireless system, a network of home sensors communicate with your control panel. The control panel sends instant signals to a remote monitoring center via a cellular network when something unusual occurs. No phone lines are involved, and there are no wires that potential intruders can cut. Both ADT and Lifeshield Security are reputable home security companies offering wireless monitoring of your home. Highly rated Protect America offers the combination of landline, broadband, and cellular monitoring with their home security systems.

Roll the Dice or Secure Your Home?

When you weight the pros and cons of installing a home monitoring system, you take into consideration the benefits of the system versus the costs. Typically, there is a fee for equipment and installation along with a monthly fee for ongoing monitoring. With the wide range of monthly fees and contracts out there, the cost of home monitoring systems varies quite a bit. Bottom line, is it worth it to you to spend the money to hedge against a potential break-in? Only you can answer that. Bear in mind, the entry level cost of a security system per year is less than the loss suffered in an average burglary.

A good place to start is to compare the services offered by the top home monitoring companies, (such as Vivint), and their fees. Analyze which companies provide the features most important to you versus the cost. Maybe you'll need to sleep on it before making an informed decision, but chances are your gut will tell you the best move to make to protect your home.
