16 Ways to Make Money Online

Last Updated:

Who doesn't want quick cash? Fortunately, there are lots of places out there to help you stuff a few cold, crisp bills into your digital wallet which can then be used for a vacation, a night out, or some sharp, gorgeous knives you've always had your eye on.

To put it simply, there are plenty of ways to satiate your monetary desires, and I'm here to nudge you in the right direction.

How to Earn Money Online

1. Take surveys and earn cash and credit

Let's begin with one of the easiest ways to earn money: participating in polls and surveys. You can even be paid to go on a shopping spree! How awesome is that? Yes, there are several online programs that companies hope you'll join, to the point that they'll throw money and points at you in exchange for rewards.

One particular program that rewards you is Google Opinion Rewards. You'll earn Google Play credits as you answer questions regarding yourself and your shopping habits, which can be redeemed for anything on the Google Play Store. But be warned: it's not always a good idea to lie on these surveys: the program can and will catch you if you do.

Of course, there are some other programs that will pay you:

Just be careful of what you download and what you use, as some programs and apps may not be legitimate programs but instead nests for scams.

2. Earn points from programs that are redeemable for rewards

Think of all the gift cards you can rack up.

There are two ways to go about this: you can take advantage of your service's programs and/or you can sign up for a credit card with a valuable rewards program. For instance, you can earn points if you shop for products on your favorite brand's website; you can then spend these points on gift cards (which may as well be cash).

You can also earn points with a service by simply remaining a loyal customer. For instance? Having Verizon FiOS will reward you with points monthly, which can be spent on nifty gift cards and other goodies.

You can also sign up for credit cards that will reward you with cash-back incentives or points, which can also be spent on gift cards, hotels, travel, and more. For instance, the Capital One-based Sony card will grant you points with purchases, which can be used to purchase movie tickets, Sony gear, and PlayStation video games.

3. Referral Programs

Hey, you need to check out this program, so I can buy that 50-inch TV I've been dying for.

A quick way to earn some cash online is to refer friends to a program or service and have them sign up. Unfortunately, this method may be a bit of a crapshoot. After all, it's a matter of who signs up for the services. If you spread the word either verbally or through social media, you may not receive a single bite, which means no referral incentives for you.

4. Receive a refund for a price drop with Paribus

Say whaaaaaat?

Yes, you can very well be entitled to a refund on the products you purchase. The best part is that you won't even need to lift a finger. With Paribus, all you need to do is shop as you normally do, as the program monitors for opportunities that will save you money. Whenever you're eligible, Paribus files price adjustment claims on your behalf. This way, you'll be saving money. It only takes 15 seconds to sign up too.

5. Sell your clutter

make extra money selling your old clothes

Probably not a good idea to sell these, however.

Selling your old items isn't 100 percent an online endeavor, but you can still rely on online apps and programs. There are many websites that exist for the sheer purpose of selling your unwanted objects. And trust me, if the objects have been collecting dust for years, then it's probably time to let them go. In fact, you can rely on sites such as LetGo, eBay, Decluttr, Amazon, StubHub, and more. You may not receive a lot of money, but hey, even a little bit means a night out at an extravagant restaurant. Totally worth it.

6. Take a job as a customer service rep... from home

So you might be groaning at this prospect, but if you want to make some extra money online, becoming a customer service representative may be the way to go. However, while working from home is an amazing experience, you may find it difficult to maintain focus on the task at hand.

Some companies that will hire customer service representatives are Alpine Access, Asurion, Convergys, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Sedgwick, Sitel, and more.

7. Become an online tutor

This is in the same vein as becoming a customer service representative, but you can also tutor students of all ages online! The pay is typically pretty decent for what you do and you may also achieve the satisfaction of teaching students how to navigate problems successfully.

Some tutoring sites that you can work for are Tutor.com, GoFluent, Brainfuse, Tutorvista.com, and Smart Thinking.

8. Write for certain online columns or blog

Have a hobby that you can't stop gushing over? Have some interesting tips that you'd like to share with the world? Fortunately, you can! You can make money by putting your interests to paper… or in this case, monitor.

You can always write articles for content mills, but a lot of the time, you may find yourself frustrated with the pay. There are plenty of sites that align with your interests that will accept your articles at much higher pay-rates. Here are some sites that you can write for:

9. Sell your gift cards

Maybe this isn't the best way to make money online, but it's quick and easy. Someone didn't know what to get you as a gift, so they decided the gift card is the best way to go. Unfortunately, you've been given a gift card to Ross, and let's face it - you hated shopping there as a little kid.

So what can you do with the gift card? You thank whoever gave you that card, hop online, and sell said card! Someone is bound to purchase the card! Though you won't always receive the full value of the card, you can still turn the card into some much-needed cash with the help of sites like the appropriately-named Gift Card Granny, CardCash, and Raise. Then again, you could always exchange your gift cards too.

10. Monetize YouTube Videos

One way to earn money - though by no means won't be easy - is to apply monetization to your YouTube videos. Many people - mostly of the more recent generations - have constructed and distributed YouTube videos for reactions, money, or both. With some charisma and the skills to produce videos, you can be successful too. It's also really fun.

11. Become a Twitch Streamer

Though Twitch may revolve around people streaming video games, there are other subjects that the service caters to, which you can check out via Twitch's Creative section. For instance, Twitch allows you to stream your process of an art piece.

Nevertheless, with Twitch, you can amass subscribers and monetize content via ads, but that's only after you become a Twitch Partner. To become a Partner, you need to reach certain requirements.

12. Take part in Amazon Mechanical Turk

Honestly, I shouldn't even be recommending this, but… it's an option. It's an option only if you're willing to accept that you'll most likely be paid in peanuts (unless you're incredibly damn good at it). Amazon Mechanical Turk is an online marketplace where you take on small tasks called "HITS" and be paid for it.

Again, you'll be paid, but the pay will be mostly in cents. Fortunately, a lot of HITS are incredibly simple and don't take up too much of your time. Unfortunately, the monotony of the HITS can become a tad mind-numbing.

13. Become an online freelancer

make extra money as an online freelancer

This is definitely not a get-rich-quick idea.

Hoo boy, where to begin here? Becoming a freelancer can be tough, depending on what you do and where you work. However, you'll be able to make the most out of your abilities and put them to to the test. If you're looking to earn a little money here and there, then you should be made aware of the platforms that will suit you just right. There are various skills that can be applied for freelancing opportunities, such as:

  • Website Development
  • Graphic Design
  • Internet Marketing
  • Mobile App Development
  • Translation
  • Data Entry
  • Transcribing

Three major sites that cater to the realm of freelancing are Guru, Upwork, and Freelancer. Unfortunately, all three sites are vicious battlegrounds containing freelancers who are prepared to tear you apart with their elegantly-constructed bios and enticing offers. It's best to do a little research and craft an alluring profile before you dive in with the sharks.

14. Create a blog

This is not a way to get rich fast. I REPEAT: this is not a way to become loaded in a matter of days. Then again, hardly anything will make it rain so quickly. Nevertheless, if you create a blog, you can earn some type of revenue as your readership grows. Here are some methods to earn money with your blog:

  • Ad Networks
  • Sponsored Content
  • Video Advertising
  • Competitions and Giveaways
  • Shopping Sites
  • Affiliate Networks
  • Premium Content
  • Donations

… And so on and so forth.

However, generating a blog is only recommended after you gain a large enough readership. It takes work - your blood, sweat, and tears are certainly required if you want to craft a blog. Not only that, but you need to write a blog that will help you stand out like a sore thumb. After all, the net is just crawling with competition.

15. Become a virtual consultant

Do you have what it takes to be a business owner? Furthermore, can you handle the tasks required of a virtual assistant? If yes, you should become one. The virtual assistant more or less handles all the tasks dictated by the client. You could be doing data entry one moment and promote content via Facebook the next. You could even be shielding yourself from the seething rage of customers over the phone.

However, to become a reliable, quality virtual assistant, you'll need to find clients and to do that, you'll need to market yourself with in-your-face websites, eye-popping social media ties, and more.

16. Sell your talent online

make extra money selling photos online

You can sell photos such as this online.

Yes, this is somewhat in the same realm as freelancing, but you're not exactly focused on a project or long-term assignments. Plus, the scope is broader. If you believe you're amazing at a certain talent, you may want to try your hand at selling the products of said talent.

For instance, you can always sell your photos to stock image websites, such as iStockPhoto, Dreamstime, Shutterstock, and more. Perhaps you crochet, or can sculpt? Why not take your abilities, craft some desired goodies and sell them on Etsy or Fiverr? There is something for all types of talent out there. You just need to look!

As a quick note, art is a force to be reckoned with on the internet. Nowadays, plenty of artists can generate an income with their digital paintings, drawings, illustrations, and what have you online. Artists can sell their works either directly or through a third-party website, such as DeviantArt.

Making Money Online Recap

As you can tell from all of the suggestions above, there are plenty of ways to earn money online. With sites blooming every day, there will always be more waiting at your fingertips. For now, you can always fire up your PC, laptop, smartphone, or whatever, plop a couple of scoops of ice cream into your bowl and get to selling, blogging, or performing any of the suggestions I've presented to you. Enjoy!
