How to Recycle a Cell Phone

Recycling a cell phone is a great idea for multiple reasons. You get rid of old unused devices that are cluttering your home, you cut down on waste and save energy, and you avoid polluting soil and water by throwing out phones that are deposited into landfills. Plus, you might even be able to get some extra cash out of your old phone. When you've made the environmentally responsible decision to recycle your old devices how are you to go about doing this? Well a lot of that has to do with what you want out of your old phone.

I just want to get rid of it

Do you have a drawer full of old cell phones going all the way back to the 90's that you just want out of the way? There are several mobile phone recycling programs, "eCycling" that allow you to safely recycle your old electronics. Check out a local program that you can take it to but make sure they are certified. Some supposed electronic recyclers use unsafe practices, but the proper certification can let you know if a place is safe or not.

I want to donate it

Maybe you don't want to just do environmental good with your old cell phone. Maybe you would like to donate your phone to a charitable organization. There are several groups that you can donate a cell phone to in order to help a good cause. For instance, if your phone is still in pretty good shape you can donate it to Cell Phones for Soldiers, an organization that accepts donated phones and buys iPhones to help keep soldiers in contact with their families. You can send them phones by mail or find a local drop off point.

I want to trade it in

Has a flashy new phone with impressive state of the art features caught your eye? Don't just shell out all the money and keep your old phone. Trade it in to offset the cost of buying the new one. Some of the top cell phone carriers have trade-in programs that accept old devices in exchange for credit towards a new device.

I want cash for it

Maybe you have several old phones lying around and you would like to get some cash for them. There are several organizations that allow you to turn your old phones into cash. Just mail them in and wait for a cash delivery to show up in your mailbox.

Don't just collect useless old phones and don't waste energy or contribute to pollution by throwing them out. Do some good whether it is just safely getting rid of them or actually getting cash back. Remember, before you trade-in, donate or sell an old device be sure you remove any sensitive data from it. Even discarded devices can be harvested for valuable information.
