Things to be Mindful of When Getting Roadside Assistance

Roadside assistance is beneficial in that it gives you access to help when you need it the most. Whether your vehicle runs out of gas or a tire goes flat, they can provide you with the help you need quickly. What is more, many providers offer coast-to-coast coverage across all 48 states and into Canada making it an enticing option to consider buying. Before you buy, it's important to be mindful of some certain things that way you know what you are receiving with this service.

Limited Towing Radius

Say you are on a family trip and your vehicle breaks down in the middle of nowhere. While roadside assistance can help you by providing a huge service area you should know that many policies come with limited towing assistance. For example, the Classic membership from AAA offers you three miles per tow whereas their Premier membership gives you up to 100 miles. This is an important thing to consider because if they must tow your vehicle more than three miles and you only have the Classic membership, you will have to pay for most of the tow charges. Therefore, it's important to ask your provider for the mileage restrictions if any before signing up for service.

Some Credit Card Issuers Offer You Roadside Assistance Features

In an effort to attract more consumers, credit card providers are offering some enticing incentives from cash back rewards to unique benefits like roadside assistance. As an example, American Express offers its card members roadside assistance features such as sending help to boost a dead battery or towing a broken down vehicle for up to 10 miles. Card members can use these services up to four times annually. While this is a great feature to have, it's important to note that these are usually less comprehensive than what you would receive with a roadside assistance policy from Allstate or AAA. With that said, it's a good idea to contact your credit card provider to learn what benefits you might have available just in case you need them.

Knowing What to Look for in a Provider

As the demand for roadside assistance continues to remain high, there are many providers available you can select. Before choosing one an important component you want to consider is the service area they cover. If you plan on traveling often and they don't cover areas you plan to visit then they won't be a good option for you. Further, you'll want to learn more about their response times when their customers need help. One way you can do this is to read reviews from customers that have actually used the service. While it's important to exercise good judgment when reading these, if you notice many complaints about slow service then it's indicative of an issue and it is best to avoid that provider. You should also learn more about their reputation by visiting the Better Business Bureau. By doing your homework ahead of time, it can help you identify the best provider with the right policy for your needs.
