ECO Mobile Review

Last Updated:

ECO Mobile is one of the growing pool of MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) that are focused on offering affordable international service in addition to domestic talk, text, and data in their plans.

MVNOs are smaller wireless carriers that lease space on the big four networks and resell it at a lower cost. ECO Mobile is a multi-network MVNO, offering coverage on the Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint networks.

The plans are divided up among the three networks that ECO Mobile utilizes.

The nice thing is that they keep it very straightforward - you know exactly what you're getting.

  • Verizon Network: Choose from 2, 4, 6, or 8 GB of 4G LTE data, with unlimited talk and text and unlimited calling to 80+ countries.
  • Sprint Network: On Sprint you can get the same data buckets as above, or you can go with smaller versions - 100 MB or 500 MB of high-speed data. Those smaller plans don't come with free international calling.
  • T-Mobile Network: Prefer T-Mobile? You'll have the same plan choices as with Sprint.

All plans come with unlimited data at 2G speeds once you use up your 4G allotment.

If you want a pay-as-you-go cell phone plan you'll get service on the Sprint network. Minutes (domestic or international), texts, 4G data, and MMS are all available at piecemeal pricing. This way you can buy data only for mobile hotspots or tablets.

All taxes and fees are included in the prices you see, with one exception - state sales tax is not included in the displayed pricing.

ECO Mobile Phone Options

ECO Mobile sells a limited selection of certified pre-owned phones. You'll find a few basic smartphones and one or two flagships, depending what's in stock.

You can also choose from a couple of other options.

Bring Your Own Phone

If you have a compatible device that's still got some life left in it you can bring your own phone to your ECO Mobile plan.

ECO's network flexibility makes it simple if you want to keep your current phone.

Sprint and Verizon are CDMA networks. That means if you own a CDMA phone it's likely it will work on ECO Mobile.

T-Mobile is a GSM network, so you're probably all set if your current device is a GSM phone.

Buy a Refurbished Cell Phone

Time for an upgrade? No problem - we make it easy for you to instantly compare the best prices on ECO compatible refurbished cell phones.

Buying a used cell phone is a super savvy option: get a high-end smartphone like the iPhone 8 or Samsung Galaxy S9 in great working condition for about half the retail price. Want to learn more about the benefits of buying refurbished? Read about the best places to buy a used cell phone.

No matter which device option you end up choosing, you will need to buy an ECO Mobile SIM card kit. You may also need to change your phone's APN settings.

And of course, always check with your new carrier to ensure compatibility before making a purchase. This is very simple to do on most carriers' websites.

Key Considerations When Choosing ECO Mobile

Now it's time to figure out whether ECO Mobile is the best wireless carrier for your needs:

On the whole, Verizon MVNOs tend to be a bit more expensive than MVNOs on other networks. Verizon is rated the top performing network (J.D. Power) among the major carriers, so it makes sense that they'd be a little pricier.

Unfortunately, those higher rates carry over to ECO Mobile's two other network offerings. On the flip side, unlimited international calling could make it worth the price of entry.
