How to compare 5G phone plans
Not all 5G phone plans are equal. Depending on what you're looking for you'll want to compare cell phone plans based on various criteria.
Type of technology
Even when you go with a low cost wireless carrier (which we highly recommend) you'll still get service on one of the big three networks.
Each of the networks uses different technology to provide 5G service. AT&T and Verizon use DSS (dynamic spectrum sharing). This method allows 4G and 5G traffic to share wireless space in an optimized way.
T-Mobile has opted to add low and mid band spectrum for its 5G coverage. Following the merger T-Mobile also adopted the mid band 5G infrastructure that Sprint had started to lay out.
All of the networks have a limited amount of the fastest type, ultra wideband mmWave 5G. Access is available in a handful of large cities and venues across the country.
Opensignal evaluated the 5G experience on all three wireless networks. T-Mobile came out on top for download speed and availability. Verizon barely edged out T-Mobile and AT&T for video experience.
How to pick the right 5G phone plan for you
As with any wireless plan you'll want to look at different aspects to see which 5G plan is best for your needs.
Most popular subcarriers give you 5G access at no extra cost. You'll want to make sure before signing up of course.
Watch your back if you go with one of the big three carriers. While most of their unlimited data plans include 5G now, some other plans may not come with it for free.
Need mobile hotspot usage? Or maybe you want HD video streaming instead of 480p like most plans give you.
Read the fine print as far as what comes with your 5G phone plan. The fastest network may be great but not if you don't get the features you really need.
Each carrier sells a variety of 5G cell phones. Just because the device works on one 5G network doesn't mean it's designed for all of them.
As always, we recommend you verify compatibility with your chosen carrier. If you're ready to buy we've compiled a collection of top devices for you to compare the best 5G phone deals.
Switching to a 5G phone plan
Once you've decided on the right 5G carrier for your needs and budget:
Choose your plan: Pick and choose the options and features you want.
Get ready for the switch: Make sure your current account is paid up and your phone is paid off. You may also need to have your current wireless provider unlock your phone.
Set up your new plan: Port your number over to the new carrier before closing your old phone account. If you're buying a new cell phone from the carrier you should be good to go. If you're bringing your own phone you'll need to order a SIM card kit first. This is typically sent through the mail.
Bring your own phone and save even more
These days it's simple and straight forward to switch to a cheaper cell phone carrier.
If you're happy with your current phone just make sure it's unlocked. This just means your provider has released it to use on another carrier.
Check with your new 5G carrier to make sure your device is compatible with their network.
Order a SIM card kit from your new wireless company and pop it into your phone. As I said though, don't cancel your old plan until your all set up or else you could lose your phone number.
