What is a SIM card?

So what exactly is a SIM card? A SIM card, or subscriber identity module card, features your subscriber profile. With this card, you'll be able to store important information such as your contacts, profile information, and more. Furthermore, you'll also be able to access your provider's tower. Without the SIM card, your cell phone would not be able to make phone calls, send text messages, or rely on data.

There are several sizes of SIM cards - there is the Standard SIM card, otherwise known as the Mini SIM card, the Micro SIM card (which is the focus of this article), and the Nano SIM Card. The Standard SIM Card is the largest SIM card on the current market, and it is also becoming more obsolete.

The Micro SIM is the second largest SIM card and fits quite a few smart devices. For instance, the Apple iPad 2 requires a Micro SIM card. Finally, we have the Nano SIM card, which is commonplace among the current Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy flagship models.

You can also rely on a dual SIM cell phone too! Dual SIMs, which typically arrive in Standard/Micro format, is compatible with either of the two sizes they come in.

What is a Micro SIM Card?

As I've stated earlier, a Micro SIM card is smaller than a Standard SIM card but larger than a Nano SIM card. It is also known as 3FF or third form factor. The 3FF SIMs were developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute for a simple reason: to fit inside devices that were too small for a Standard SIM card.

So just how large does the Micro SIM measure? It measures 25 mm x 15 mm x 0.76 mm.

It shares the width as the Standard SIM card, meaning that it is "backward" compatible. You could thus trim a Mini or Standard SIM card and it will work with particular models. However, you could always buy a Micro SIM adapter kit so you can fit a Micro SIM card into a Standard SIM slot.

Devices and SIM Sizes

Different devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy S8 or the Apple iPhone 7, require different SIM sizes. Unfortunately, the latest flagship devices of the most popular brands require Nano SIM cards, but there are plenty of devices that use the Micro SIM card.

For instance, the Apple iPhone 4, Blackberry Z30, HTC Windows Phone 8X, Motorola RAZR HD, and Samsung Z3 all rely on Micro SIM cards.

Pro Tip: Unfortunately, the iPhone SIM card slot has shrunken over time. After the iPhone 4, the iPhone SIM card slot has only accommodated Nano SIM cards.

It's More Than Phones

SIM cards are versatile pieces of technology, even if they appear to be unassuming plastic. Using a SIM card cutter, you can shave off excess bits until you have a card compatible with the SIM card slot of your device. Just make sure you don't damage the chip using the SIM card cutter--that's the part which holds all of your vital information!

Nowadays, the SIM card is used for more than just the cell phone. In fact, they are used in activity trackers, and more.
