So What is a SIM Card?

A SIM card, or subscriber identity module card, contains your profile and other information, such as text messages, phone number, contacts, and more. Not only does a subscriber identity module card hosts your identity (more or less), but it also allows you to communicate with a tower specific to your carrier. In other words, without a SIM card, you won't exactly be able to operate your phone with the carrier.

You should also be made aware that there are various types of SIM cards: for instance, if you're a traveler, you can always purchase an international SIM card or a local SIM card. Furthermore, there are various sizes of SIM cards that slip into a SIM tray. For instance, there are three different SIM card sizes used nowadays (though one is becoming rather obsolete).

Let's delve into them below:

The Sizes of SIM Cards

As I've already mentioned, there are three SIM card sizes to take into consideration: the Standard SIM card, the Micro SIM card, and the Nano SIM card. As a side note, some retailers and/or carriers feature dual SIMs, which feature both the Micro SIM and the Standard SIM cards in one bundle.

Standard SIM Card

The Standard SIM card, which is also dubbed the Mini SIM card, is the "second generation" of SIM cards. This is why you'll also find that it is named the 2FF, or second form factor. It is now considered standard size because the original standard size SIM card, the first generation SIM card, has become obsolete.

The measurements of a Standard phone SIM card are 25mm x 15mm x 0.76mm.You'll find that many smartphones today do not require a standard SIM card.

Micro SIM Card

The Micro SIM card, otherwise known as third form factor (or 3FF) is the "third generation" of SIM card types, measuring at 15mm x 12mm x 0.76mm. The Micro SIM card was made for the purpose of fitting into devices deemed too small for the Standard SIM card.

Not only that, but Micro SIM cards are known to be backwards-compatible, featuring the same assets and design as the Standard SIM. The only difference? The amount of plastic surrounding the chip.

Nano SIM Card

The most current (and smallest) SIM card type that is available on the market is the Nano SIM card. The Nano SIM card is now today's new standard, becoming the SIM card of many flagship models such as the latest Apple iPhone series and the Samsung Galaxy lineup. This smart card was only released during 2012.

Where to Find the Samsung Galaxy SIM on Each Model

Here's how to find the SIM slots on the latest Samsung Galaxy models:

  • Samsung Galaxy Note 5 - On the Samsung Galaxy Note 5, you can find the SIM card right above on the indicator light, on top of the body. In other words, it's located on the top left-hand side of the body.
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 - The Samsung Galaxy S6 SIM card tray is located on the right side of the Galaxy S6 body, underneath the power button.
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge - The Samsung Galaxy S6 edge SIM card tray is located on the top side.
  • Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ - Just like the S6 edge and the Note 5, the SIM card tray is located on the top of your device, on the left-hand side.
  • Samsung Galaxy S7 - The SIM card tray is located on the top of the Samsung Galaxy S7.
  • Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge - Similar to the Samsung Galaxy S7, the SIM card tray is located on the top of the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge.
  • Samsung Galaxy S8 - The SIM card tray is located on the top of the Samsung Galaxy S8, on the left-hand side.
  • Samsung Galaxy S8+ - The SIM card tray is located on the left-hand top of the Samsung Galaxy S8.
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 - Okay, so this is a tablet, but I wanted to include this as well. On a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, you'll find the SIM card slot located on the top edge of the device.

How to Remove the Samsung Galaxy SIM Card

Looking to remove your Samsung Galaxy SIM card? You can do so with the following easy steps!

  1. You should have been given - in your Android Phone's packaging - a removal tool. If you have lost the removal tool, you can always rely on a paper clip.
  2. With this removal tool, you slip it into the pin hole of the SIM card tray (depending on the device, the SIM card tray also may hold a Micro SD card slot, so be careful with the Micro SD card slot).
  3. When the tray pops out, pull it out of the device. Depending on the model of your mobile phone, it's best to be careful to not slip the ejector tool into the microphone hole that's also located on the top of your phone.
  4. From there, you simply remove the SIM card from the tray.
  5. Insert the tray back into the device.

Recap

Overall, you'll find that SIM cards are essential to the Samsung Galaxy lineup, just like the Apple iPhone series. Don't have a Samsung Galaxy phone? Check out our guides for the Apple iPhone SIM cards and other Android phones as well, if you'd like to review them.

Hopefully, this guide has helped you step further into the world of SIM cards, SIM trays, and more.
