Dental Plan Options from Cigna
There are three plans to choose from. The least expensive is the preventative plan, covering only the cost of oral exams, X-rays, fluoride applications, sealant and non-orthodontic space maintainers. It covers 100% of these items. This is a pretty good deal, but if you price check these procedures in your area, your annual dental bill might be similar to the cost of the insurance.
The other two higher-tier plans pay a percentage of dental work from fillings to root canals. The top plan, Cigna Dental 1500, provides coverage for orthodontia with a one time deductible of $50. There is a one year waiting period before you can take advantage of this. If you have children in the house who need braces, the Cigna Dental 1500 is a decent plan.
Here's a brief overview of the three plans:
- The Cigna Dental Preventive plan features no yearly maximum, no deductible, with Cigna paying 100% of in-network preventive and diagnostic services, and discounts for restorative and orthodontia services. Frequency limitations do apply. Prices start from $17 per month, per person.
- Next up is the Cigna Dental 1000 plan, paying up to$1,000 annually after the$50 individual/$150 family annual deductible. Coverage includes preventive, diagnostic and restorative services, with an in-network discount for orthodontia. Frequency limitations apply with this plan. Rates start at $25 per person, per month.
- The Cigna Dental 1500 is their top tier plan. It pays up to$1,500 annually withthe samedeductibles as the Cigna Dental 1000. Coverage includes preventive, diagnostic and restorative services. This plan also includes an orthodontia benefit for all ages with a $50 deductible per year. Coinsurance and waiting periods may apply to certain services. Rates for this plan begin at $30 per person, per month.
The company's network of dentists has 85,000 providers. It is not the largest network in the country, and indeed for a company of its size it could be larger. Cigna does cover costs for dental service if you use a provider out of their network. When you visit a non-Cigna dentist, you may pay the difference between the Cigna network rate and the fee of the outside dentist.
How Does Cigna Compare?
Cigna is a huge multi-national health and life insurance company. Their dental insurance is touted in their marketing materials as comprehensive, and they promote the fact that they cover 100 percent of standard preventative maintenance along with a reasonable percentage of root canal, crowns, orthodontia and more. They cover a lower percentage of the fees for some basic services such as fillings compared to the competition. If you have children or are moving overseas, it's a dental insurance company well worth considering. Residents of New York or Washington are not eligible for Cigna Dental insurance.
Pros and Cons of Cigna Dental
You don't have to submit claims with Cigna, their network service providers handle it automatically. No referral is necessary to visit an out of network dentist for any specialized procedure, although you pay the difference should the dentist's fee exceed the amount that Cigna will reimburse for the service.
You may be able to waive waiting periods if you had prior qualified coverage, but this does not apply to orthodontia.
Rates vary with age and geographic location, determined by zip code. Not all plans and options are available in every state.
Cigna dental insurance delivers good basic coverage, but some competing insurance companies cover more of the costs of dental services.
Members can cancel their policy of the first day of the month following the company's receipt of a written notice. If your dental plan is part of a Cigna medical insurance policy, you may incur a tax penalty if you don't have other coverage in place, such as a group medical plan via an employer. If you are canceling a dental only policy, this is not a concern.
You can access Cigna customer service via the toll free number on your membership card, 24/7. You can also contact the Cigna from their website, log in to your myCigna account, via computer or mobile device. There is a FAQ page at the Cigna website, but it has limited choices.
Some consumer reviews state that Cigna is stingy about paying claims on dental work performed out of the Cigna provider network, and felt that they were looking for any reason to not pay. Cigna says that no referral is necessary, but it might be a good idea to call ahead to customer service if you plan to have work done outside of their network.
