Blue Cross Blue Shield Health Insurance

Blue Cross Blue Shield is an association of 38 independently operated member companies, which provide coverage to more than 100 million policyholders across the continental United States, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii. Health insurance provided by BCBS member companies is affordable and covers many medical conditions. When it comes to health insurance, you want to make sure you're always covered and there's always someone who has your back. Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance is there for you. Accredited by the Better Business Bureau, BCBS has outstanding customer service with representatives available around the clock all week. You can process insurance claims quickly and if you ever need to manage your account, you can do so online.

There's even some web-based tools made available to you to help you manage your health. Blue Cross Blue Shield is very affordable for the average family and you get great value for the price. There are, however, a few things that made us rethink BCBS a bit. For one, their premiums, products, and services are inconsistent; depending on your location, health, and what organization you're talking to, everything could change. Consistency is something you need with health insurance. However, we did not think it would be fair to give it too low of a rating, as we're doing a review on Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance as a whole.

Plans and Prices

The biggest benefit of Blue Cross Blue Shield is that the company offers plans for any budget, family size and need. Coupled with the fact that the company has been around since 1982, in its current form, one can, with confidence get a plan and feel happy.

While it's a well-run organization that gives you lots of options, there are some drawbacks. When using Blue Cross Blue Shield, customers often find that information, prices and policies are different depending on a host of factors, and some of those factors don't make sense all the time. But, with a quick phone call or check of the website, a potential client can find the best plan he or she needs.

Customer Service

Much like most insurance companies, there is a lot of information online. While overwhelming at times, there is a great FAQ with information for every person and situation, and whether a client is looking for a basic plan to cover accidents or serious illnesses or a client is looking for a plan for his or her entire family, there are lots of options that are easy to find. When going to the website, it's easy for a user to request a quote, and from there, one can find what they are looking for. If not, a quick phone call or chat session can answer any questions.

The one major drawback is that Blue Cross Blue Shield does not have as many basic plans as other companies. This means that a person in their mid-20's will not have an east time finding a basic plan to cover accidents and serious illnesses. However, with decent deals on other basic plans, a young person can find a plan that covers a bit more. One major advantage is in the shopping process as a person can go to the website, enter his or her information and find the best plan. Combined with a heavy Internet presence and a toll-free number, it's easy to find a plan, no matter the age or needs of the client.

Online Quotes

The online quote feature is very intuitive, though it is a bit overwhelming at first. The Blue Cross Blue Shield website makes it clear on how to get started and where to proceed. Once a visitor inputs his or her zip code, they can enter their household information such as number of people in the household, their age and their income. From here, a visitor will see a list of available plans, with various prices and different amounts of coverage.

Other times, if one wants to, they can compare plans by selecting the compare button on the site. By browsing either the bronze, silver, gold or platinum plans, a user can see what works for his or her situation.

Additional Features

One complaint many people have about most insurance companies is that lack of communication. Plenty of providers will take your money and give you quotes, but to get good service is not always easy. With a well-written FAQ, you can find your answers to most questions. Also on the site is a glossary, where it's easy to understand medical terms that the average person doesn't understand.

Medical billing problems and insurance in general are not easy to understand, and it's in the best interest of providers to offer the best customer service and explain everything. Unfortunately, providers have a hard time giving all the information to its clients, and it's easy to see why. Blue Cross Blue Shield goes the extra mile. With AskBlue and AskBlue Medicare, customers can get information that they would otherwise have to dig up for hours. With Web-based tools, you can deal with all your claims and make sure your information and billing is up-to-date.

When looking to have an elective surgery done, one can actually save money with Blue Cross Blue Shield by checking out the Procedure & Service Cost Estimator. Once a member puts in the information, they can figure out how much a procedure will cost. This is a breath of fresh air as most insurance companies and hospitals alike don't offer up-front ideas on pricing.

Currently, a lot of people travel, work and play overseas. In fact, many Blue Cross Blue Shield customers use the service as it's easy to travel internationally and not worry. This is in stark contrast to other plans that offer little in the way of protection. In a medical emergency, a patient can go directly to the nearest hospital and figure out the cost later. Or, if the situation is not dire, it's easy to call BlueCard Access at the toll-free number and get advice. When calling, one can get information and figure out where they need to go to get help. All in all, when traveling internationally, Blue Cross Blue Shield has people covered, and this is a huge advantage.

Verdict - Very Good

We strongly recommend you that you consider Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance if you don't have plans to move to another state soon. However, even if you do, all member organizations provide excellent medical coverage.

BCBS are the worst health insurance company out there. Not only do make contacting them difficult, they donít pay out and expect you to cover the costs. I may as well have no health insurance the amount they have cost me.
