Humana Health Insurance

Best Value Award 2016

Humana brings a human touch to its health insurance policy; giving you tools and relevant information to help you better manage your health. The company's website is packed with good data and tips on everything from staying healthy to filing a claim and identifying health risk events. It's already clear why Humana is at the top of our review, it has a lot going for it in the health insurance industry.

By joining Humana you get world-class, A+ customer service-available to you 24/7. Whenever, wherever, as long as you have a phone with a signal or an internet connection, you can get in touch with someone to answer your health insurance questions. A lot of stuff can be taken care of online such as account management, registration, and even shopping for medical insurance. Their website is so easy to use, just about anyone can navigate it.

Customer Service

Among its standout qualities is that Humana has some of the best customer service available. Not only does the company meet the minimum requirements for basic care of clients, but it goes above and beyond in order to meet the needs of people who have insurance.

Accessibility is one of the key components for this. For example, there is a TTY extension available for hearing impaired customers who need to get in touch with somebody fast, a fairly common need. Less common but still very smart is that the company has representatives that speak approximately 200 languages on staff in order to address concerns for non-English speakers. While this should be obvious, most companies fail to have more than just Spanish speakers on staff, if that. This helps the company expand its reach to whole segments of the population that would otherwise be un-served and provide top quality care to people who might not be comfortable communicating in English.

Getting in touch with a member of the customer service team couldn't be easier. So long as you have a phone signal or an Internet connection, you can reach somebody from the company that will answer your questions, provide you coverage information, or direct you to somebody who can meet your particular needs. Wait times to get a hold of a representative are generally pretty low both online and over the phone. There is even a 24/7 help line to answer health-related questions from customers so they can make informed choices.

Self-Service

One of the advantages to working with Humana is that you don't necessarily need somebody to walk you through a particular problem or help you find a solution. The company empowers its customers to be able to do a lot of that work for themselves, drastically cutting down on the amount of time that it takes to answer a question or solve a problem.

The Humana website is excellently laid out, making it very simple to find the kind of information that you're looking for. Whether it's contact information, health data, or just comparisons of the various plans that are available, it's very simple to look up what you need to know and get it taken care of quickly.

Among the wealth of information about specific plans that Humana customers can find on the website is several articles about living a healthy lifestyle. From information on how chiropractic works to healthy eating habits and when you should go to the doctor, there's a lot there to help you avoid major health problems. This works out well for both the customer and the company.

Another helpful accessibility option is the Humana app, which manages to bring together many of the best aspects of its other outlets into a single package. Not only can you access and manage your account on the go, you also have the articles and much of the health information available to you. Plus the app makes it easy to get in touch with a representative if you need one and can even be set to help with medication reminders. You can even use the app to shop for new plans that better fit your life and how things may have changed for you recently.

Additional Features

One of the best things about Humana is that the company is always looking for ways to improve its customers' general health. While this is a bit self-serving in that it has to pay for less care, it also means a healthier lifestyle, which is certainly worth the effort.

Humana Vitality is a reward program that provides benefits to customers for making good health choices. When you show that you've been picking up on health habits, you are given reward points that can be used on healthier foods, memberships, and even services like movie tickets to provide an incentive to get better. There is a separate app that you can use to record and spend Humana Vitality points.

Client states also have Humana Guidance Centers to help people get healthier. At these physical locations, people can attend cooking or exercise classes, they can get involved with seminars, and they can get their insurance questions answered by professionals on site and in person. More than that, you don't even have to be a Humana customer to take advantage of these.

Drawbacks

Perhaps the biggest drawback is that Humana only offers coverage in 22 states at the moment, with no word on their plans for expansion. While this means that somebody with a PPO plan might be covered in any state and emergency services are generally covered regardless, those with the HMO might have trouble finding a doctor while on vacation or an extended trip.

Less of a problem is that the company doesn't offer short-term coverage for people that need to cover a small gap in their insurance.

Verdict - Superb

No health insurance plan is perfect, and Humana's coverage options certainly aren't. But after extensive reviews, we haven't found any major negatives in Humana's value proposition. The positives are numerous and relevant; our favorite is the tool enabling you to compare plans side by side and to estimate your healthcare costs.

Unfortunately my company changed over their policies and it looked like a great plan at a pretty reasonable rate. Don’t be fooled. The agents are rude and they increase your policy without warning.
