AT&T Internet Packages

The availability of the AT&T internet plans is dependent on where you live. While it fails in comparison to the myriad offerings by comparable providers like Comcast, you still receive a healthy selection of AT&T internet plans. Additionally, you will have access to AT&T WiFi hotspot if you purchase a package. AT&T WiFi hotspot is available in thousands of areas at no fee to the customer, and - better yet - AT&T offers an instant WiFi hotspot to anyone, but those who aren't subscribers will have to pay a fee.

AT&T's slowest high-speed internet offering - outside of DSL service - is its 6 Mbps plan. This plan is perfect if you want to surf the web or check email, but don't require much in the way of streaming TV shows or playing video games online. When you sign up for this plan, you do receive the antivirus suite through McAfee to provide another layer of protection.

Next is Internet Max, which provides you with 12 Mbps. With this plan, you are able to view internet TV services such as Netflix and Hulu, though video gaming could be an iffy experience.

Next in line is the 24 Mbps U-Verse high-speed internet plan. With this plan, you receive downstream speeds quick enough for your movie or TV show streaming needs. It's also the perfect plan if you want to connect multiple devices to the internet while not encountering a lag in service speeds.

The fastest AT&T U-verse internet plan for regular internet is 45 Mbps plan. This internet access plan is best suited for connecting multiple devices and streaming shows or playing games on them. While this plan is great at the speeds it offers, it pales in comparison to some offerings from Comcast, where you can receive more than double of these downstream and upload speeds.

Lastly, if your area offers it, you can take advantage of AT&T's fiber optic internet. As noted above, this service allows you the fastest access to the items you want such as downloading 25 songs in a second. Furthermore, with fiber optic technology, you will have the pleasure of experiencing parallel upload speeds alongside download speeds.

Of course, if your location bars you access from any of the higher-tiered AT&T U-Verse internet plans, you can always adopt AT&T dial-up internet, which is the slowest internet available from AT&T. With AT&T dial-up internet, you'll receive unlimited nationwide access, firewall software, and parental control software.

You also have the option of AT&T DSL internet. The slowest broadband service product, DSL internet, can provide you with downstream speeds of between 200 Kbps and 768 Kbps, but the fastest type of DSL service grants you download speeds of up to 6 Mbps.

Internet Deals

To find the best internet deals, you'll want to shop for them around the holidays, as AT&T offers some of its best promotional pricing during this time. Bundling is also a great choice to consider since you can take advantage of multiple services for an affordable price.

Internet Service & Features

AT&T touts a 99% reliability connection when you use its internet services.

What this means is if it lives up to its claim, you shouldn't experience much in the way of service interruption, which makes it confidence inspiring for residential customers.

One of the immediate benefits of the AT&T U-Verse internet service is that you'll receive professional installation of all the necessary equipment after you select a plan. If you sign up during a promotional period such as the holidays, you might not have to pay for the installation at all.

AT&T touts a 99 percent reliability connection when you use its internet services.

This is great in that the service technician ensures everything, including the wireless gateway modem, is working properly. Unlike service providers like Comcast, who would rather mail you a kit and have you figure out everything on your own, the high level of service from AT&T gives it an edge.

To keep your devices connected wirelessly, AT&T offers its wireless gateway modem. This serves as the connection hub throughout the home, where you can connect your devices via WiFi and depending on the speeds you select, stream video, play music and more.

AT&T also takes into account your security when browsing online. Considering that even email providers like Yahoo! have had its information hacked, protecting your information is a paramount concern.

To allay your fears, AT&T offers an internet security suite powered by McAfee. This internet security suite comes available with every internet plan, which, coupled with safe browsing behaviors, can keep your information safe.

Depending on which area you live in, you might be able to take advantage of fiber optic technology through AT&T. To give you an illustration of how fast this network is, AT&T boasts that you can download a 90-minutes movie in under 34 seconds.

Now that we have gone through the different types of internet access powered by AT&T U-Verse, let's take a closer look at the internet packages it offers.

AT&T Data Caps

The available AT&T internet plans have data caps. Depending on the plan, your monthly data allowance may differ. For instance, if you have DSL, you will face a monthly data allowance of 150 GB. With cable internet, the data caps are set at 1 TB. However, if you opt for the Internet 1000 package, you'll have access to unlimited data caps.

You'll receive two courtesy months from AT&T, but if you exceed your monthly data plan for a third billing cycle, you'll be charged $10 for each additional 50GB of data. However, if you purchase a DIRECTV package or U-Verse TV plan bundled with the internet, you'll receive an unlimited usage allowance.

Internet Speeds

I talked about the company's internet connection speeds a bit in the last section, but what do they mean to the average buyer? If you are like me, it is hard to place those numbers into context. However, to provide some illustration of what you need, here's a look at the different activities you can do online and what they require in the way of download speeds:

  • Surfing the web: 1Mbps
  • Streaming video: 4Mbps
  • Playing online games: Up to 5 Mbps

Now that you know what each activity requires, you can determine the download speed you need, accounting for everyone in your household's personal internet browsing habits. Luckily, AT&T has you covered in this regard, featuring high-speed internet plans ranging from 6 Mbps all the way up to 1,000 Mbps--in the case of its fiber optic service.

Moreover, the wide range of AT&T U-Verse internet plans allows you to find the one you want without having to overpay for service. Therefore, if you are looking for cheap internet providers that won't break your bank, AT&T U-Verse isn't a bad choice to consider.

If you require more than internet service, then AT&T U-Verse bundles have you covered. These bundles include cable TV through its U-Verse service, otherwise known as U-Verse TV, and home phone, but it has also partnered with DIRECTV to offer satellite TV service too. Below is a look at some of its more popular packages and what each entails. However, do keep in mind that if you don't use a landline phone and are instead committing only to a wireless service, you may not be saving money in the end. In that case, you may be eligible for a wireless service bonus if you combine AT&T wireless services with DIRECTV.

It should be noted that with AT&T U-Verse TV, you'll have access to both an HD service and a Total Home DVR system that complements the service. With U-Verse Total Home DVR, you can record up to four shows at once on a single DVR, record and play back your shows from any room in your home, pause, fast-forward, and rewind live or record shows, program your DVR from your mobile phone or computer, and store up to 422 hours of standard definition or 155 hours of HD service programming.

With the U-verse TV bundles, you'll have access to digital TV packages, including U-Family TV, that are equipped with parental controls. AT&T also features parental controls for its internet service, dubbed Smart Controls. This service, which is free of charge for AT&T internet customers, allows you to control what your children can do and view online.

Furthermore, with these AT&T bundles, you may be eligible for various U-Verse promotional offers, including a reward card. That's right, if you purchase a bundle, you could receive a Visa reward card for a specified amount. However, you will want to activate the reward card with the RewardCenter AT&T site. On the RewardCenter AT&T site, you are required to either input your claim number or your account number and zip code. If you would like to know more about the prepaid reward card, you should refer to the reward card cardholder agreement. With the cardholder agreement, you'll learn more about PIN purchases, as well as using your card.

U-Verse Double Play

This plan is one of the more popular, as it combines its internet service and cable plan. With this bundle, you receive internet speeds up to 6 Mbps, which is its slowest offering, and over 200 channels - in other words, the U-Family TV package. The plan requires a one-year commitment, so if you cancel before then you could incur a cancellation fee.

Though this plan does come with the slowest internet offering, you can upgrade at any time. AT&T makes it easy for you to do this by logging into your account online and changing packages, as you do this, you'll see how these adjustments affect your monthly bill. However, to ensure that nothing goes awry, be sure to check your bill every billing cycle.

U-Verse Triple Play

If you also want home phone service, U-Verse has you covered with this bundle option. This plan builds on the U-Verse TV + internet one with its digital home phone offering. Similar to the other U-Verse plan, it requires a one-year commitment and you can lock into your price during U-Verse promotional periods for two years.

By digital home phone offering, I'm referring to simply the digital home phone, which is now called AT&T Phone. However, you can opt for AT&T Phone in the bundle, as well as GoPhone Wireless home phone.

U-Verse Internet and DIRECTV

With this plan, you receive its 6 Mbps internet speeds with DIRECTV service. Similar to all the other internet plans offered by AT&T, you receive the wireless gateway to connect all your devices through WiFi. Since the download speed is low, you might want to consider upgrading if your household has multiple devices.

U-Verse Internet, DIRECTV + Home Phone

If you want reliable internet, digital home phone, and satellite TV service, this is the right plan for you. As is the standard for the other plans offered by AT&T, you receive internet speeds of 6 Mbps. Additionally, if you want unlimited talk, the traditional home phone service in this bundle grants you local unlimited calling but not unlimited long distance. However, you can attach unlimited long distance to local unlimited calling for a larger fee. When you're a residential customer, the opportunities with AT&T home phone service open up.

You can also check out the AT&T U-Verse coverage map. When there, you can select your location at the top of the front page if it doesn't automatically come up.

AT&T U-Verse Customer Support

Customer reviews and company reputation are two great ways to determine whether or not you might enjoy an AT& U-verse internet plan. AT&T scored a 64/100 on the American Customer Satisfaction Index, an average score amongst its competitors. On the Better Business Bureau, AT&T is an Accredited Business with an A+ score. Keep in mind that the experiences of one customer are not representative of the company as a whole, but it is important to spot potential issues you may have with the company early nonetheless.

Dealing with cable and internet companies are never fun, but at least with AT&T, it isn't always a bad experience. It has multiple points of contact including phone, live chat, and in-person options if a store is near to you. Furthermore, there are tools that you can take advantage of without resorting to in-person conversation, live chat, or phone dialogue.

For instance, if you're experiencing issues with your U-Verse TV, Phone, or Internet services, then you should look up power outage information on AT&T's site. Unfortunately, depending on whether or not you have data or have purchased a mobile hotspot, you may not be able to access the site if you are indeed suffering from a power outage. If you're interested in a mobile hotspot plan, then you should refer to our review of the best mobile hotspot plans.

Live chat is a particularly effective means of addressing your problem if it is minor and be resolved in under 30 minutes. Typically, you can have your problem addressed and fixed much quicker online than by calling or visiting a store.

Customer Complaints

Arguably the biggest customer service problem for AT&T concerns is communication. Customers have remarked on how they receive a deal for U-Verse at an AT&T store only to receive their bill and find out the promotional offer wasn't applied correctly.

Another problem is once you are done with the promotional period, AT&T doesn't express much interest in the way of retaining you as a customer. A great example of this is the price hikes you'll receive after the promotional period for your internet service ends. Then, when you call in to negotiate with a service rep, they will provide you with a quote that is often much higher than what new customers pay.

Regarding customer service, AT&T has recently found itself in a bit of hot water. An FTC complaint was filed regarding customers who were charged up to $9.99 per month for "premium text message services" without customer consent for several billing cycles. The FTC complaint has since been rectified, with the FTC providing refunds to more than 2.7 million customers. Over 2 million current AT&T customers received bill credits, while 660,000 former customers instead received a check; this was during February of 2017. The average refund amount? $31.

Therefore, while the support is much better than say Comcast, that is also setting the bar quite low too. AT&T's customer service representatives are attentive, but be prepared for a sticker shock if you plan to stay with the company after your promotional period ends.

AT&T is a good option to consider, delivering a great selection of internet speeds and packages to satisfy a wide range of customer budgets and preferences. Adding to its allure is its 99 percent internet connection reliability, free anti-virus software, and excellent entertainment bundling options you won't find with other providers. With these things in mind, if you are seeking the best internet providers, like these here, you should give AT&T closer consideration. AT&T also offers several cell phone plans.
