Verizon FiOS Overview

While Verizon FiOS' service is limited to only 14 areas, its service is rated the highest in the country as an internet service provider. Better yet, it provides a fiber optic communications network for television, phone, and internet. A fiber optic network offers speeds and reliability a streamer or gamer would only dream of, all for a reasonable price. Like Time Warner Cable, Verizon FiOS' service has no data cap, allowing you to download and upload files to your heart's content. Also like Time Warner Cable, Verizon FiOS offers bundles in the form of double or triple-play packages that will allow customers to save a few extra dollars.

Referring to customer service, Verizon FiOS internet boasts the best customer service within the ISP industry, scoring 73 points according to the 2016 American Customer Satisfaction Index. It's not the best score possible - far from it, in fact - but it's the highest customer satisfaction score ever achieved in the industry.

Is Verizon FiOS Right For You?

You should adopt FiOS if you:

  • Would like the best customer service in the internet service provider industry
  • Dislike data caps
  • Work from home and desire stability in your data connection
  • Are a heavy-usage gamer or video and music streamer
  • Are a cord-cutter and use services such as Netflix, Sling TV, or PlayStation Vue

Verizon FiOS Coverage Map

Verizon FiOS' service is rather limited, covering only nine states, with the most coverage in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

Time Warner Cable Overview

Time Warner Cable is an internet service provider that has recently been absorbed by Charter Communications. The service is heavily focused on the east coast, though it does reside in other states like Texas and California. Time Warner Cable also offers solid bundling packages for both telephone and television.

Time Warner Cable mainly offers coaxial broadband internet, which is less reliable and speedy in comparison to Verizon FiOS. In regards to Time Warner Cable's base plans, the minimum offered is the Standard package, which features 15 Mbps download speed and 1 Mbps upload speed. The maximum offered? The Ultimate package, which allows for up to 50 Mbps download speed and 5 Mbps upload speed.

Then there is the Spectrum internet service, which has recently been introduced to Time Warner Cable. Depending on your area, download internet speeds run up to 60 Mbps download and 4 Mbps upload, though supposedly, some areas offer the 100 Mbps download tier. Fortunately, the service also includes a free modem. For what price is the Spectrum service? The price begins at $29.99 per month, but only when bundled.

Unfortunately, the network isn't always reliable, especially in rural areas. If you live in a rural area, you may experience slow speeds during late nights, high latency, and even disconnects, which can grow more frequent with time.

Is Time Warner Cable Right For You?

You should purchase a Time Warner Cable package if you:

  • Enjoy solid double and triple-play packages
  • Aren't too concerned with having blazing fast speeds
  • Shudder at the thought of unlimited bandwidth

Price Plans Between Verizon FiOS and Time Warner Cable Internet

There are several different packages that both Verizon FiOS and Time Warner Cable offers, included bundled services. Time Warner Cable's internet prices are quite steep for what you're receiving - this excludes modem rental fees, taxes, and more. For $69.99 with Time Warner Cable, you'll receive 30 Mbps download speeds and 5 Mbps of upload speed (which is barely sufficient for some services that often require a 5 Mbps upload speed), but for the same price, Verizon FiOS offers up to 150 Mbps download speeds and 150 Mbps upload speeds. That's quite the difference, isn't it?

Of course, the prices above are the standard prices of Time Warner Cable's internet tiers. Fortunately, the prices are discounted based on promotions such as Online sales or first-time customer bonuses. Furthermore, you also save by bundling up with a double or triple-play package. That being said, if you're a heavy internet user and are famished for faster downloads, then you should consider adopting Verizon FiOS.

So what does Verizon FiOS offer in comparison to Time Warner Cable in terms of plans?

Verizon FiOS offers faster speeds at similar prices, though there is an extra $10 per month rental fee for the router (though you can purchase a router from the company for $149.99), set-up charges ($80), taxes, and more. Yet, despite the high prices, you're squeezing more speed out of each dollar in comparison to Time Warner Cable's offerings. So it's clear that Verizon FiOS offers more for your dollar.

Verizon FiOS vs Time Warner Cable

According to the key statistics illustrated at the beginning of this comparison article and between these two internet service providers, Verizon FiOS offers greater speeds and boasts a better ACSI Customer Service Score. Better yet, as a FiOS customer, you're receiving more speed compared to the advertised speed, unlike Time Warner Cable, where you're receiving just-as-advertised speed. The particular statistic isn't bad in the slightest - all it means is that with Time Warner Cable, you're receiving what you're paying for.

Verizon FiOS or Time Warner Cable - Which Is Better?

It's clear, thanks to its prices, value, and best-in-the-industry customer service, that Verizon FiOS takes the crown over Time Warner Cable. Unfortunately, Verizon FiOS isn't offered everywhere, but if it is available in your area - and you'll want to check - you'll need to take advantage of the service, especially if you're a gamer, video streamer, or a professional working from home. After all, the service offers a fiber optic communications network, complete with high speeds, lower-than-average latency, and top-in-the-industry customer service, all for reasonable prices that remain competitive with Time Warner Cable. I can safely attest that I would choose Verizon FiOS over Time Warner Cable any day.
