Embrace Pet Insurance

If you want nose-to-tail pet insurance coverage, Embrace Pet Insurance is a strong contender. This company has a strong reputation as a provider of excellent coverage on big-ticket events but also on interventions pertaining to smaller health conditions and risks.

Embrace was founded in 2006 by two MBA graduates who actually started the business plan for the company while still in school. They decided on the name 'Embrace' to represent the emotional bond between a pet parent and his or her pet.

The company's core values include: being open and honest, customer fixation, giving back to the community, and taking personal responsibility.

Coverage and benefits

Embrace allows you to personalize your coverage plan based on your needs and regardless of what type of plan you choose, you can still receive their wide range of coverage options. Embrace offers quality coverage for chronic conditions, accidents, and genetic conditions as well as faster payouts.

Their coverage plan in simple and comprehensive and covers medical expenses related to breed-specific conditions, cancer treatment, diagnostic testing and imaging (e.g. X-ray, ultrasound, MRI), surgery, hospitalization and nursing care, alternative therapies and rehabilitation, ER and specialist care, along with prescription drug coverage.

Disadvantages

One big downside to this company is their limited customer service, only available from 8:30 a.m. to 8:00p.m. Monday through Fridays. Also, they have age limits that vary based on the species and breeds of your pet. For cats, mixed breeds cap off at 10 years and purebreds at 8 years. For dogs, mixed breeds are limited to 8 years and purebreds limits are at 6. This could be a deal breaker for some pet owners considering that many animals live well beyond these caps.

There's also quite a few things embrace doesn't cover and that includes: pre-existing conditions, prosthetic limbs and devices including mobility aids, breeding, whelping and pregnancy, orgran transplants, treatment for an illness related to the teeth and/or gum, cosmetic procedures (tail docking, ear cropping, and dew claw removal), along with injuries caused deliberately by you or any other person in your home. For a complete list of exclusions, you can visit their website.

Plan Information

Embrace offers personalized policies allowing you to choose your annual maximum, annual deductible and reimbursement. If you have more than one pet that needs to be insured, each pet can have a different deductibles and maximum amounts depending on their needs.

Due to the personalization option pet owners can take advantage of, policy prices can vary based on the deductible you choose. You can lock in life-time coverage once your pet is enrolled as long as they are under 14-years-old.

In addition to your pet's insurance policy, you can add Wellness Rewards that will help with annual check-ups, vaccines, flea and tick medications, dental hygiene and more. Wellness rewards is an optional plan that isn't insurance, but acts as a flexible health savings account for preventative care for your pet and more. With Wellness Rewards there's not deductible, copay or waiting period like with most insurance and Embrace offers three main reimbursement options.

Pet owners can choose from:

  • $250 allowance per policy year
  • $450 allowance per policy year
  • $650 allowance per policy year

How the Insurance Works

Once you enroll, the waiting period for coverage is 14 days for illnesses, 48 hours or 14 days for accidents depending on your state, and 6 months for orthopedic conditions for dogs only. Another important factor that can determine when your coverage starts is the last time your animal has visited the veterinarian. Embrace requires that your pet has visited the vet within the past 12 months. If your pet hasn't done so, you can always take care of that during the waiting period.

When it comes to using Wellness Rewards, when you add it to your policy and utilize it, it will show up as a separate charge from Embrace Pet Insurance. You can choose to pay monthly or annually and make payments right along with your pet insurance policy.

Resources

In addition to offering free and personalized quotes on their website, Embrace also you to compare and determine pet insurance rates in your state and connect with their pet insurance agents all on their website. They also have an online community center and blog offering helpful tips and articles about pet care and safety, pet health and lifestyle and more.

If you are interested in adopting a pet from a shelter or if you own/operate a shelter, Embrace has free materials you can download on their site like a new puppy or kitten checklist and other free printables. This company's strong financial status is also demonstrated in their high BBB rating.

Although, customer service availability is limited the quality of the service itself is the subject of praise among many consumers. Customer reviews say that the customer service representatives are friendly and caring. On the other hand, many customers said claims processing took longer than they expected or would have wanted.

Verdict - Great

The bottom line is that Embrace Pet Insurance is a good insurance option if you have a younger pet. The control over your plan that this company offers you is what makes it worth considering. There are a lot of choices available so that you can make a plan that is right for you. Wellness Rewards is a suitable preventative care option to help you cut down on the costs of regular wellness check-ups and vaccines if you're willing to pay the extra money for it each month.

However, there are a few things that put Embrace lower on the list of the best pet insurers. The mark down is not only because of their exclusion of older pets but also due to the fact that they cover pet medication as an add-on, which is a negative. There is also a waiting period for accidents and illnesses which can be a problem for many pet owners.

As with all pet insurance options, you have to weigh the pros and cons and decide if you can overlook the cons and receive suitable coverage for your animal.

I recommend Embrace to anyone who asks for advice on pet insurance. I have never had any issues with them and it is so nice to speak to a friendly representative whenever you call. I would advise double checking the policy you get and make sure that it covers everything you want it to, even if you have to pay a little bit more. You can't put a price on the health of you best friend!

My friend recommended Embrace pet insurance to me after her experience after her cat was injured when hit by a car, and I can not speak highly enough of Embrace. The reps you speak to are so lovely and especially when you are calling up regarding a claim, they sound like they actually care, and that really helps when you are going through a worrying or sad time with your pet. I have luckily only had to make one claim but they are professional and the claim was processed really quickly.

6 out of 10 rating 6 Customer service Make you pay $$ upfront when claiming

When I picked up my dog for the first time, my vet offered me a free insurance with Embrace for 4 months, it was a promotion they were offering, so I thought it would be a great option. Near the end of my 4 months trial I needed to put a claim in, only for a minor issue, but it was not worth it as they wanted me to pay $200 up front. I cancelled my free trial and signed up with another company.
