PetPlan Pet Insurance

Petplan has been commended for their coverage options, offerings and overall value. Petplan is a company that is dedicated to providing pet parents with the support and resources they need to keep their pets safe, happy and healthy.

Cofounders Natasha and Chris founded the company after going into debt to care for their sick pet. Petplan is headquartered in Newton Square, PA and is a sister company of Petplan UK which is the world's oldest and largest pet health insurer. Petplan is licensed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, as well as select provinces in Canada.

Coverage and Benefits

Given the fact that one in three pets will need unexpected vet care this year, it's important for pet owners to explore insurance coverage options for their animal. PetPlan offers comprehensive coverage for medical expenses and conditions like veterinary exam fees, diagnostic treatments, surgery, prescription medications, imaging (mri, cat scan, ultrasound), cancer treatments, dental treatments, rehabilitation, behavioral therapies and more. Their bronze, silver and gold packages each come with distinct insurance options including veterinary exams, prescription treatments, surgery and many other procedures.

Petplan defines a pre-existing condition as one which "first occurred or showed clinical signs or symptoms before the effective date of your policy or during the policy waiting period." In certain instances, if the pre-existing condition can be cured, you may be eligible for coverage. One of the great things about Petplan is that you can use your family veterinarian or any other licensed vet in the country as well as some locations in Canada. Check their coverage area on their website to learn more.

Pet parents will be assured to know that Petplan offers life-long coverage for hereditary and chronic conditions (with no hidden limits/exclusions) including cancer, prescription medications, dental treatments, CAT scans, and MRIs. This is a company that understands that many pets will develop ongoing medical conditions throughout their lives like diabetes, hip dysplasia and arthritis and they want to be there to provide the much needed coverage and support for those animals and their families.

Petplan shares real examples of a few of the animals they've helped with their Covered for Life policy on their website and that includes Maddie, a 4-year-old mix breed dog living in San Diego, CA. Maddie has cruciate ligament disease with arthritis and over the course of three years, Petplan has been able to provide $17,621 worth of coverage for her medical needs.

Disadvantages

One of the big disadvantages of Petplan pet insurance is that routine vet exams and office visits like wellness exam are not covered. Petplan also doesn't cover elective procedures so if your animal does not absolutely need a medical procedure or service, and you elect to have it done, you may be on your own when the bills comes in.

While Petplan offers quality coverage for hereditary and chronic conditions, there are annual limits that you should consider. Keep these things in mind when comparing your option and trying to find a pet insurance company that will best suit your animal and their needs.

Plans and Pricing

PetPlan offers free enrollment to their services in addition to a 30-day money back guarantee, so long as no claim has been filed in that thirty-day period. There are three major plans to choose from that offer a variety of options and they start from just $1-$2 per day. For example, the bronze plan has an annual policy limit of $10,000 for veterinary fees, while the silver plan has a limit of $14,000 and the gold plan has a limit of $22,000.

When you enroll, you can choose from a deductible of $50, $100 or $200. If you choose to enroll in a plan with this company, that are quite a few discounts you can secure to lower your monthly payments. Petplan allows you to save up to 15% on your premiums by offering 5% off for enrolling your animal in one of their plans online, take 10% off for enrolling more than one pet, 10% off for enrolling a medical services pet and 10% off for being a veteran or currently serving in the military just to name a few.

How to Use the Insurance

Once you receive a quote, choose a deductible and reimbursement, and finish with the enrollment process, you'll be ready to start utilizing the insurance after a brief waiting period. The waiting period for Petplan insurance is just 24-hours for accidents and 14 days for illnesses. There is a 6-month exclusion on cruciates and patellas.

Petplan offers a flat-fee reimbursement for your veterinary fees. Based on Petplan's claims process, all claims are to be paid in a window of 30 days after receiving the complete submission (medical records, invoices, and signed documents). Although they allow 30 days, many claims are resolved faster-in as little as five to 14 days so you're not delayed!

Resources

Petplan offers free quotes on their website along with a tool that helps you calculate claims. They have a helpful FAQ section on their website along with pet health and safety articles. Customers can search for a veterinarian in their area that accepts Petplan from the website and they can also ask questions to experienced industry experts and veterinarians.

When you have a policy with Petplan, you'll be given log in credentials to access the policy holder/customer portal and manage your account online. Customer service is available 24-hours each day for your convenience and you can contact customer care by phone, email, or mail at your discretion.

Verdict - Very Good

If for any reason you're not satisfied with PetPlan you may cancel your policy at any time and you can even get your money back within 30 days of enrolling. Customers generally don't opt for this choice however, due to the company's extensive coverage options, and quality offerings.

The lifelong coverage option and variety of plans offered may make this option sound appealing along with the ability to use your deductible. While routine exams and care are not covered, you'll have the freedom to customize your plan and enjoy a low monthly rate.

If for any reason you're not satisfied with PetPlan you may cancel your policy at any time. Customers generally don't opt for this choice however, due to the company's extensive coverage options, and quality offerings.

5 out of 10 rating 5 Quickly processed successful claim Extremely slow at paying money into my account.

I was pleasantly surprized at how quickly my claim was successfully dealt with.

However, when it came to reimbursement, that took a while. It has now been a week and still waiting.

Petplan really helped me out when my cat at only 3 years old had to be in and out of surgery for about a year. The policies they offer are fantastic and at competitive prices, but they do take a while going over all the paperwork and paying out.

A pet is part of the family, and our dog is no exception. When he became ill we were distraught and when he vet told us how much it was going to cost it was worse. We would pay whatever it would take to get him better, but thanks the Petplan we didn't have to then worry about getting into debt. The agents you speak to are supportive and friendly and they deal with everything quickly and efficiently to take away that stress.
