Trupanion Pet Insurance
Trupanion provides excellent pet insurance for your furry friends and makes sure they have access to the best medical care available. The company was founded by CEO Darryl Rawlings in 2000 and insured their first pet located in Vancouver British Columbia. Trupanion focuses on offering simple, fair, and affordable pet insurance.
Coverage and Benefits
Many pet insurers cover injuries and illnesses, but one thing that makes Trupanion unique is their coverage of damage that your pet may do to a property of a neighbor. On top of that, they cover accidents, hereditary conditions, diagnostic tests and congenital conditions are covered, in addition to vet supplements, hospital stays, medications and surgeries. Aside from the traditional coverage, they also cover a variety of unique treatments like herbal therapy, kidney transplants, homeopathy and stem cell therapy.
Coverage is also offered for orthotics, prosthetics and carts under your core coverage plan with no additional costs added. If you need to insure a working dog, there are flexible coverage options for law enforcement dogs, search and rescue dogs, hunting dogs and other working pets. Trupanion does not exclude coverage for any conditions based on breed-specific ailments.
Trupanion allows you to visit any veterinarian throughout the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico and this includes emergency hospitals and specialty veterinarians. Dogs and cats must be between the ages of 8 weeks and 14 years old to qualify for coverage and should also live in either the U.S., Canada, or Puerto Rico.
If you need extra coverage, Trupanion offers a Pet Owners Assistance Package for an additional cost. The package helps provide financial protection against unforeseen events or circumstances that are caused by or associated with your pet. This can include a wide variety of coverage including:
- Third-party property damage caused by your pet
- Trip cancellation costs due to a sick or injured pets
- Cremation or burial costs for a pet who has suffered an accident
- And more
While Trupanion does offer a wide range of coverage to help meet your animal's needs, there are a few disadvantages. Like a few other pet insurance companies, Trupanion's insurance plan doesn't cover exam fees, wellness and preventative care (this includes flea treatment, dental cleanings, and vaccinations) or pre-existing conditions.
Trupanion's coverage is also not valid in many other places throughout the world. So if you are traveling with your animal, that may be a concern for you, but if you plan on keeping your animal in the country at all times, this may not even have an effect on you.
Another thing to consider is that while Trupanion does provide an additional coverage package for pet owner, it's at an additional costs and the company doesn't provide any direct solutions for how pet owners can obtain coverage or financial assistance in any way with preventative care for their animal. So, if you are shopping for an insurer and your pet has regular treatments of medical needs, you may want to consider other options.

Verdict - Good
Trupanion, deserves a 4 star score because it provides affordable pet health insurance for your pets (cats and dogs, specifically), and the rates are further reduced if the animal is between 2 months and 14 years old. Customers can enjoy the benefit of being able to adjust their monthly premium as a result of being able to choose their own deductible. The excellent customer service is a positive extra as well.
The fact that Trupanion doesn't have any option to receive coverage for preventative care is something you should consider before enrolling your animal to see if it is an absolute necessity or not. Having a pet savings account is always a good idea to back up any type of insurance company you choose.
While the company does have negative reviews on consumer review sites that complain about small payouts and limited reimbursements, many reviewers talk about how they enjoy affordable and quality service.
