Moto G Play Review: Key Features

Last Updated:

The Moto G Play is a budget phone that is surprisingly enjoyable to use for an extremely affordable cost. If you're not interested in playing the most intensive games on the App Store or streaming high-quality video to your handset on the go, the Moto G Play offers a solid experience that covers every base you would expect from a smartphone today.

Let's dive right into some of the notable features that make the Moto G Play a great budget smartphone.

Although this phone is targeted towards those on a budget, you wouldn't guess it just by looks alone. The plastic material of the Moto G Play is firm and tactile to the touch which reduces the risk of a slip or drop. Everything feels solidly built and looks nice, although it's not particularly stylish by any margin.

It's not a tiny phone like the iPhone SE, but it is one of the smallest Android smartphones on the market. The 5" LCD runs a 720p resolution screen, which is nothing to call home about compared to a Samsung Galaxy 8, but looks quite nice on a smaller screen. Images are bright and crisp from the average viewing distance.

Motorola is thankfully one of the few Android manufacturers that don't stuff their handsets full of useless bloatware. The Moto G Play runs Android Marshmallow, which is a little outdated, but offers solid performance. This is a breath of fresh air, especially since the tiny 16GB internal storage doesn't leave you much room.

The camera app is easy to use and supports auto photos, video, and panorama modes, however, we noticed some lagging while taking panoramic shots. I was fairly surprised that the 8 MP camera snaps decent photos that are good enough to share on social media.

The Moto G Play is an insanely affordable handset, making it a smart choice for budgeters. The low-end specs are enough to satisfy a child's first smartphone or someone who won't need a device for much else other than talk and text. However, you can certainly find better options from Motorola and its competitors for a few extra dollars.
