SIM cards are essential in today's smart devices. Without them, we couldn't rely on the cell phone towers we have grown to love. Nano SIM cards are specifically designed to be compatible with only certain gadgets--typically the latest smartphones and some new connected devices.

What is a SIM card?

A SIM card, or subscriber identity module card, contains your subscriber profile. With this plastic smart card, you'll be able to store important information such as your contacts, text messages, and more. Furthermore, with a SIM card, you'll have access to your cell phone provider's tower. Without the SIM card, your cell phone would not be able to make phone calls, send text messages, or rely on data.

There are also several types of SIM cards available to you: there are prepay SIM cards, which allows you to access your cellular provider's tower so long as you haven't used up your allotted data, minutes, or text messages, international SIM cards, which grants you access to a service for a far cheaper price,

  • Prepay SIM Cards - Prepay SIM cards allow you to access your cellular provider's tower so long as you haven't used up your allotted data, minutes, or text messages.
  • International SIM cards - International SIM cards grant you access to a service for a far cheaper price.
  • GSM SIM Card - GSM SIM cards let you use GSM towers. You can learn more about GSM SIM cards here.
  • CDMA SIM Card - CDMA SIM cards let you use CDMA towers. You can learn more about CDMA SIM cards here.

There are several sizes of SIM cards to take into consideration:

  • Standard SIM Card - The Standard SIM card, otherwise known as the Mini SIM card, is currently the largest card on the smart device market, even though it is becoming more obsolete.
  • Micro SIM Card - The Micro SIM card is the second largest SIM card, fitting into many SIM card trays. The older Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy models require a Micro SIM card. Additionally, the Apple iPad Air 2 requires a Micro SIM card. Future Apple iPads, however, require a Nano SIM card.
  • Nano SIM Card - The Nano SIM card is the most used and current SIM card on the market, used by the latest Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy flagship models. Not only that but the Nano SIM card is used in many Android mobile phones. Nano SIM cards have been included in many starter kits for some time now. However, starter kits can be pricey, as they may include a mobile phone plan.

SIM cards are incredibly versatile pieces of tech--even if they may appear as unassuming plastic. Depending on your device, it may be possible to transfer SIM cards over. To do so, you may need a SIM card cutter, which is a simple sharp instrument which allows you to cut your SIM card to size.

A SIM card that has been clipped by a SIM cutter, however, may physically damage your phone if you're not careful with the snipping procedures. So if you're wary of the SIM cutter, you can always instead purchase a SIM card adapter. With a SIM card adapter, you'll be able to transfer your profile to another phone.

You can also rely on a dual SIM cell phone too, but what is a dual SIM phone? A dual SIM phone takes two SIM cards, but those phones are few and far between.

What is the Nano SIM Card?

The Nano SIM card is the fourth generation of SIM cards. In fact, it is otherwise known as 4FF or "fourth form factor." The Nano SIM, which debuted in 2012, measures at 12.3mm by 8.8mm by 0.67mm, making it 15 percent thinner compared to the Micro SIM and Mini SIM cards.

The Nano SIM is reduced to basically the gold contact area, meaning that the amount of surrounding plastic is small.

SIM Cards and Device Sizes

The size of the SIM card slot - or SIM card tray - is dependent on the device itself. Many devices accept SIM cards, but each one may require either a Nano SIM card, Micro SIM card, or Nano SIM card.

For instance, some devices that require the Nano SIM card in their SIM card slot are the Apple iPhone 7, Google Pixel XL, HTC U Ultra, LG G6, Motorola Moto Z Force, Samsung Galaxy Note 5, and more.

SIM Cards and Smart Devices

SIM cards are not only used for cell phones; you may be surprised to learn that they play a role in several other devices as well. For instance, did you know that a SIM card is used for more than just phones but also GPS trackers, tablets, alarm systems, smart watches, and more.

Do keep in mind that if you need to unlock your SIM card, you will need either a PUK code or SIM pin. Do note that you do need a PUK code (personal unlocking key) only if you failed to enter your SIM pin number numerous times.
