HTC Desire 526 Review: Key Features

Last Updated:

The smartphone world can be a very overwhelming place. There's a lot of buttons, notifications, beeps, flashes, clicks, slides, and swipes. While it's an exciting step toward the shiny chrome-filtered future we're all waiting for, the complicated nature of a smartphone can be too much for some people.

That's where the HTC Desire 526 comes in. As a budget smartphone exclusive to Verizon through a prepaid plan, this handset is designed with simplicity and ease-of-use in mind. The Desire 526 is a great choice if you're looking for a child's first smartphone, don't need the latest model with all the bells and whistles, or suffer from 'information overload.' With an attractively low price, the Desire 526 balances a lot of the traditional features you've come to expect from a phone with worthwhile twists and benefits.

Let's take a look at why you should consider the HTC Desire 526.

On the surface, there isn't much to say about this cell phone--it's definitely going for a no frills design. However, that doesn't mean that HTC hasn't put time and effort into crafting a smartphone that is enjoyable to use.

The standard candy bar design is longer than most smartphones at this price range, thanks to grilles at the top and bottom for the earpiece and speaker. Despite its length, the compact design of the Desire 526 makes it easy to use in one hand. You'll also find a micro-USB port, a headphone jack, microphone, and front facing camera. On the back is a dual slot tray: one for a SIM card and one for a microSD card, and the rear facing camera.

Under the surface, we find the improved battery and processor that makes this handset a true value at such a low price. The Android KitKat OS and Sense UI skin reduce the amount of bloatware and unnecessary preloaded apps most smartphones suffer from. Switching between apps and multitasking is easy with the octa-core processor. You can also customize your experience with HTC BlinkFeed and Themes, which includes options to change colors, app layouts from the drawer, and receive specialized news and social media updates in a single feed.

The rear camera is a standard single shooter with some tricks the higher end models commonly have, and take impressive shots in low light.

There are a few negatives to point out, however.

The 4.7-inch IPS LCD screen has a resolution of 540x960, which is severely outdated for smartphones today. Details are still bright and clear to read, but it can be a major turn off if you plan to play a game, surf YouTube, or watch a movie. Speaking of which, entertainment is definitely not one of the HTC Desire 526's strong points.

With 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage (but with room to expand with a microSD card), any intense activity will cause the handset to slow to a crawl.
