Asus Zenpad Z8 Review: Key Features

Last Updated:

The Asus Zenpad Z8 is a handy little tablet that's full of surprises. Long time readers will know that I have little love for bloatware and unnecessary apps preloaded onto a device. Often, these largely useless apps and features go unused and definitely unwanted, consuming swathes of precious internal storage and slowing things down. When I first got my hands on the Asus Zenpad Z8, a Verizon exclusive, needless to say, I was worried.

Much to my surprise, then, that the Zenpad Z8 delivers a solid experience nearly free of compromises in a fantastic little tablet at an affordable rate. This LTE-enabled device punches well above its weight, with eye opening specs that is unfounded on such a small tablet at a low price.

It isn't all rainbows and sunshine, however. The cost of the Zenpad Z8, however, is where the first compromise is to be made. You can pick up the Zenpad Z8 from Verizon for just under $250. Unfortunately, the midrange stats of the Zenpad Z8 fail to contend with other tablets in its price range. Instead, you can subsidize the cost by opening a contract for monthly payments. A contract could be a good or bad thing, depending on your point of view, but in an age where contract cell phone plans have gone extinct, I'd rather not commit to anything for too long.

If you can look past the price and two-year contract, the Zenpad Z8 has a lot of neat stuff. Let's take a look at some of the core features.

The 0.3-inch thick Asus ZenPad Z8 is quite slender. Its front features a simple, 7.9-inch display, with thin left and right display bezels, and its back panel offers an elegant, textile-patterned, soft-touch finish that is comfortable to hold and becomes nearly forgettable when tossed into a bag. Power and volume buttons live on the right side, while a flap on the top left side covers slots for the micro-SIM card and microSD card (it supports up to 128GB). The ZenPad Z8's headphone jack sits on the device's topside, and its Type-C USB 2.0 port lives on the bottom.

The Asus ZenPad's 7.9-inch, 2048 x 1536-pixel display is a stunner, offering tons of detail, brightness, and color. The internal VisualMaster technology enhances and renders images similar to high-end HDTVs. Coupled with the sharp display, images come in incredibly realistic with accurate contrast and detail. VisualMaster also works to increase screen refresh rate, resulting in a lag-free (at times) experience when gaming or streaming video. However, the screen is rather reflective, making it difficult to look at it while outside in sunny areas. Also, the screen and is a magnet for smudges and fingerprints. The ZenPad Z8's top and bottom speakers filled a medium-size conference room with great sound.

Powering the ZenPad Z8 is Qualcomm's Snapdragon 650 processor with 2 GB of RAM. The hexa-core processor is fairly standard for devices at this price point, lying somewhere between weaker than your laptop or home computer but stronger than your cell phone.

Surfing the web is fast and the tablet can handle the strain of loading multiple pages at once. Sliding through the UI or opening apps is responsive. However, the Z8's limits get pushed severely when you start playing intensive games or using the camera for a quick snap. Shutter speed is annoyingly sluggish, and some games can bring the whole tablet to a crawl. For daily tasks like email, social media, and light gaming, the ZenPad Z8 will do the trick.

The ZenPad Z8 runs Android's Marshmallow OS with the Asus ZenUI layer coupled with the typical Verizon junk tossed on. Asus tablet veterans won't find significant changes, but those new to this brand of tablets might find some confusion moving around at first. Fortunately, the Settings offer some nifty customization tools. The bloatware and OS will eat up the paltry 16GB internal storage, so be sure to slide in a microSD card.

Lastly, the ZenPad Z8 has access to 4G LTE connectivity, unlike most other mid-range tablets. With a data plan, you can tap into Verizon's speedy nationwide network for computing on the go when a WiFi signal isn't around. You'll have to pay extra, of course.
