Before we get started on our PlayStation Vue review, let me answer the one question looming in your mind - no, you don't need a PlayStation to subscribe to their streaming TV service!

What you do need, though, is to know whether the PlayStation Vue channel lineup and price point meet your needs. Of course, you also need to know if your favorite shows are available and what sporting events you'll have access to.

In the following PlayStation Vue review, we'll answer all those questions, plus give you the lowdown on the very real advantages of opting for streaming TV over traditional cable.

Key Considerations When Choosing a Streaming Service

Before you decide between PlayStation Vue, Sling TV, Apple TV, and the many other streaming services available today, there are a few factors to consider:

  • Price: This seems obvious but what I mean by price is to really sit down and calculate what all of your entertainment will cost. According to Forbes, 83% of streaming customers subscribe to more than one service. So you want to make sure the total of what you're spending will actually save you money over cable.
  • Content: There is a wide variety of options when it comes to content type and selection. Some providers, like DIRECTV Now, have channel offerings similar to cable. Others, like fuboTV, focus on sports. There's something for everyone.
  • Discounts and free trials: It's a good idea to take advantage of the free trial offered by most streaming TV providers. It's the ideal risk-free way to see if the content and user experience are a good fit. You can also catch a discount now and then if you search for promotional offers before signing up.
  • Internet: Don't skimp on your internet connection. You don't need the best internet service available but it should be at least 3 Mbps for one person to stream and 5 Mbps for HD video or multiple users.

PlayStation Vue Plans

PlayStation Vue Access

PlayStation Vue Core

PlayStation Vue Elite

PlayStation Vue Ultra

There are four PlayStation Vue channel packages. These plans offer a more cable-like experience than some other streaming providers.

This plan includes more than 45 channels in a wide range of genres. Examples include:

  • Discovery
  • Disney, Disney Jr., and Disney xD
  • Food Network
  • Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2
  • HGTV
  • TLC
  • TNT

The PlayStation Vue Core package ramps up the sports coverage, adding the following and more:

  • ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, and ESPN U
  • MLB Network
  • NBA TV
  • NFL Network
  • SyFy
  • USA

The Elite package adds more movies and general entertainment choices:

  • Hallmark Drama and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries
  • EPIX Hits
  • FXM
  • Hi-YAH!
  • Science
  • Sony Movie Channel
  • Universal Kids

The Ultra package kicks in premium channels HBO and Showtime.

With PlayStation Vue local channels are included, so you'll be able to keep up on local news without having to buy an antenna.

You should know, however, that PS Vue does not offer Viacom-owned channels. Those include the likes of Comedy Central, MTV, and Nickelodeon.

PlayStation Vue Prices

PlayStation Vue prices are on the higher end as streaming services go. Still, the huge channel selection makes it a great option if you want to leave cable without losing variety.

Four different package choices make it easy to find something you like. Be careful with the add-ons though - it would be pretty easy to drive your bill up toward $100 a month, which is close to the average cable bill.

On the plus side, the DVR is free. Some streaming services charge up to $10 a month for DVR functionality so you do save a bit there.

The best streaming TV providers give you extra perks and optional add-ons. PlayStation Vue is no exception.

Add-on Packages

  • Sports Pack (requires Core or higher plan): NFL RedZone, ESPN Bases Loaded, Eleven Sports Network, Stadium 1, 2, and 3, and more
  • FX+
  • Español Pack: BabyTV, Nat Geo Mundo, Universo, and a few others

You also get free use of the PlayStation Vue DVR system, including up to 10 custom recording profiles. Recordings are saved in the cloud for 28 days.

You may also wonder how many streams PlayStation Vue offers. You can have up to five simultaneous streams and install the PlayStation Vue app on five different devices, making it easy to watch TV everywhere.

PlayStation Vue Sports

When it comes to sports channels PS Vue is almost as solid as cable and satellite.

Why "almost"? Because of the one thing that's conspicuously missing - the NHL Network. Of course you'll still have regular hockey content available on other sports stations like Fox Sports and NBCSN, but it's worth mentioning.

Other than that somewhat glaring omission, PlayStation has sports fans pretty well covered:

  • Regulars like ESPN, and NFL Network
  • Regional sports networks like Fox Sports
  • Extras like the Golf Channel and the Tennis Channel
  • College sports coverage including the SEC Network and ESPN College Extra

PlayStation Vue Compatible Devices

When it comes time to get hooked up you shouldn't have any trouble. Use any of the following streaming devices:

  • PS3 and PS4 consoles
  • Roku devices and TVs
  • Apple TV (gen 4 and up)
  • Amazon Fire TV
  • Google Chromecast
  • Android phones and tablets
  • Apple iPhone and iPad
  • PC and Mac

PlayStation Vue User Experience

It's not surprising that the makers of a popular gaming console would produce a superior, intuitive streaming interface. There's a lot to like in terms of user-friendliness.

Firstly, they offer live TV streaming service and on-demand content, like most streaming TV providers.

In terms of viewing, you'll find a number of savvy features:

  • Status bar displaying the point in a program at which you're tuning in
  • Ability to add favorite shows as well as favorite channels, which saves on search time
  • Sporting events are broken down by date, with team and league displayed
  • Settings to toggle sports scores on and off in the preview
  • Extensive closed captions options

It's not all sunshine and roses, as is sometimes the case with even the best TV services.

Some people find the DVR menu frustrating because it doesn't mark watched episodes. Others complain that you can't just record one episode of one show - you must select the entire show, then the DVR records every episode from that point on.

Benefits of Streaming TV

Not sure about joining the cord cutters? Here are some great reasons to hop on the internet TV bandwagon:

  1. Cost: Even the best cable TV providers can't beat the pricing offered by most streaming services. Plus, no monthly equipment rental fees. You'll just have a one-time outlay for a streaming device, if you want to watch on your TV in addition to the mobile apps and web browser access.
  2. Freedom: The best cable TV deals are typically those that require you to commit for at least a year. That can stretch into two years, particularly among satellite TV providers. Streaming TV is paid for month-to-month, which means no contracts.
  3. Flexibility: While we haven't quite reached the point of complete channel customization (although Philo TV comes close!) streaming still gives you the most flexibility to choose exactly what type of content you want.

PlayStation Vue is, ultimately, a good option if you are searching to replace the cable TV experience. The pricing and channel variety are both very similar to DIRECTV Now, although PS Vue has slightly better app features.
