PS Vue is a TV streaming app, which means it's available on multiple streaming devices.

That said, let's dig in and examine the pros and cons of Sling vs PlayStation Vue!

Sling vs PlayStation Vue: Key Considerations

Here are a few general tips to keep in mind when deciding on a streaming TV provider:

  1. Price: Bear in mind you may need multiple streaming subscriptions to get all of your favorite TV shows. Make sure you're getting the most bang for your buck.
  2. Channel selection: Even the best streaming TV providers don't carry every single channel. Make sure you're getting the ones you really want.
  3. Premium channels: This is one area that varies to an extreme among live TV services. Some offer comprehensive themed packs on the side, while others offer only a few of the main movie channels.
  4. Compatible devices: Not every service works on every device. There are a few major players that are universal, sure - Roku, Android and Apple mobile devices, etc. but gaming consoles and obscure devices vary as far as compatibility.

Sling vs PlayStation Vue Channel Packages

These two providers differ a bit in terms of their live TV packages.

  • There are four PlayStation Vue plans ranging from 45+ to 85+ live channels.
  • Sling plans come in three basic packages - Sling Orange (30+ channels), Sling Blue (45+), and Orange + Blue (50+).

Local Channels

  • PlayStation Vue local channels are widespread with 450+ affiliates.
  • Sling local channels consist of Fox and NBC and are available in select markets.

Entertainment Essentials

  • Both providers give you the popular channels like AMC, Bravo, Food Network, HGTV, FX, FXX, TBS and more.
  • Sling TV channels include A&E, which is missing from PS Vue.
  • PlayStation Vue channels do not include Viacom channels like Comedy Central, MTV, and Nickelodeon.

Kids

  • Sling doesn't offer much in the way of children's programming in its regular plans. You can get Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, and Nick Jr. - if you opt for Orange + Blue. They have plenty for kids in their extras, which we'll cover in a minute.
  • PS Vue is also a bit light on kids' channels due to its lack of the Nickelodeon family of networks. You get Cartoon Network, Disney, Disney Jr., and Disney XD, plus Boomerang in the top two tiers.

Just a note - Sling does not carry Fox News whereas PS Vue does.

Sling vs PlayStation Vue Prices

Sling TV packages are cheaper than PS Vue at first glance. If you add Sling extras to bring you up to the channel counts of the larger PlayStation Vue plans then you're looking at a more comparable cost.

Sling vs PlayStation Vue Premium Channels & Extras

Add on packages are where Sling really shines, giving you ultimate control over exactly what kind of programming you get.

PS Vue offers a few extra packages too but not nearly as many.

Sling Extras

  • EPIX
  • Showtime
  • Starz
  • Comedy
  • Español
  • Heartland
  • Hollywood
  • International
  • Kids
  • Sports

PlayStation Vue Extras

  • EPIX Hits
  • Español
  • FX+
  • Sports
  • HBO and Showtime (as standalones you can link to your PS Vue account)

The main advantage of PS Vue extras is that they keep it simple. With Sling, you'll get a different pack of channels with Sling Orange and Sling Blue, so it gets a bit complex.

DVR

  • PlayStation Vue DVR is complimentary and allows you DVR storage for all episodes of up to 500 programs for 28 days.
  • Sling DVR comes at a small monthly fee. You get 50 hours of DVR recording time and you can protect programs from auto-delete.

And of course, both providers give you plenty of video on demand content.

Sling vs PlayStation Vue Sports

Sling and PS Vue both offer plenty of live sports coverage.

Sling Sports

With Sling Orange:

  • ACC Network Extra
  • ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3

With Sling Blue:

  • NBC regional sports
  • NBC Sports Network
  • Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2
  • NFL Network

The Sling sports extra pack gives you 12 more channels with Orange, including NBA TV and NHL Network.

Sports fans with Sling Blue get 9 additional channels in the add-on pack, including NFL RedZone.

PlayStation Vue Sports

Just some of the sports channels offered with the two lower tiers (which are most comparable to Sling pricing):

  • Big Ten Network
  • CBS Sports
  • ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNews, ESPNU
  • Fox and NBC regional sports networks
  • Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2
  • MLB Network
  • NBA TV
  • NFL Network

The PlayStation Vue sports add-on includes all regular season games with NFL RedZone, plus 15 more sports channels. You must subscribe to Core - the second level plan - in order to add on extras.

Sling vs PlayStation Vue User Experience

So how is the actual experience of using these two streaming TV services?

User Interface

  • Sling is reminiscent of Netflix in its appearance. The search feature isn't as rich as it could be, but you can go back and watch shows you missed up to three days in the past.
  • PlayStation Vue is pretty straight-forward with neat features like the ability to favorite channels as well as shows. On the downside if you choose to DVR a show it automatically records all episodes from that point on rather than just one.

Number of Streams

  • Sling Orange comes with one stream, Blue gives you three simultaneous streams, and Orange + Blue comes with four.
  • PlayStation Vue gives you a generous five simultaneous streams.

Compatible Devices

In addition to the normal supported devices like Roku, Chromecast, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Fire Stick, some smart TVs, mobile apps, and web browsers, the Sling TV app is also compatible with Xbox ONE, Xiaomi, and AirTV.

The PlayStation Vue app is compatible with all the usual suspects, plus PS3 and PS4.

Recap

The bottom line:

  • Sling TV offers plenty when it comes to add-ons and affordability.
  • PlayStation Vue has the edge in terms of the number of streams and DVR features.
