Should You Buy a Refurbished iPad Mini?

Last Updated:

The Apple iPad mini is the first in its series to feature plenty of power inside a screen that is easy to carry around. However, in a used state, is it worth the price? It certainly can be, though if you have a little bit more money to spare, you should consider purchasing a more recent edition of the iPad Mini.

But before we begin, you should know that if you're considering buying used cellular iPad mini, then the tablet will likely be unlocked. In other words, you'll be able to use the tablet with any provider that will support it, as long as you have the required SIM card inserted. For more information on the plans you should consider for the iPad mini, you should refer to our tablet plan comparison tool.

To start, the design of the iPad mini is rather atypical. The most popular tablet size is between 9.7 and 10.1 inches, and the iPad Mini stands at 7.9 inches diagonal, featuring a brushed metal back and quality that Apple is known for. In other words, it shines with a "premium" flair. Furthermore, it features 4G support but no Touch ID. Even better is that this device is more affordable than the iPad 4, there are some drawbacks to the device. For one, the device does not support iOS 10 or 11, leaving it vulnerable to particular exploits. Furthermore, there may be apps that are not or are no longer compatible with iOS 9.

Furthermore, the iPad mini features three available storage options: 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. Unfortunately, there is no 128GB option, but 64GB should be plenty of space.

The iPad mini doesn't feature the Retina display, meaning that it is stuck with a lower resolution (1024 x 768p IPS at 163 pixels per inch) than the iPad mini 2. While this doesn't mean the original iPad mini's display is terrible, it isn't as sharp as it could be.

In regards to processing power, the iPad mini runs on the dual-core A5 processor. By today's standards, the processor is rather slow, especially with the iOS updates, but it shouldn't struggle with running apps. It also includes 512MB of DDR2 RAM.

And what of the camera? Well, the rear iSight camera contains a 5MP sensor, which is decent for taking photos and is complemented with autofocus, face detection, backside illuminations, and hybrid IR filter components.

Furthermore, the front-facing, FaceTime HD camera contains a 1.2MP sensor for 720p FaceTime capabilities. Finally, the iPad mini offers 1080p HD video recording, complete with video stabilization, face detection, and backside illumination.

Finally, the battery. The battery allows for 10 hours of video playback and web browsing, despite being a 16.3-watt-hour rechargeable lithium-polymer.

Overall, you should certainly give the iPad mini some consideration, but since there are newer models of the iPad mini available for a little more, it's best to invest in one that remains supported by future iOS updates and is an improvement in terms of specifications.

If you're on the hunt for the iPad mini's best price, then you should be sure to compare prices online. You're likelier to find a better deal online than at a physical retailer. However, make sure to compare prices of refurbished and unlocked iPad mini models from top resellers to guarantee the best price for your device.

However, if you're not interested in buying a used iPad mini and are instead looking to sell your device, then you may want to read our article, "Where Can You Sell Your Old Phone?" You'll find information that is not only useful for cell phones but also tablets.
