Boost Mobile review in October

Pros

  • New upgraded network with DISH

  • No annual contract

  • Unlimited music streaming

Cons

  • Coverage in rural areas

Boost Mobile is one of the more well-known MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators). Previously owned by Sprint, they were sold to DISH when Sprint merged with T-Mobile.

However, T-Mobile has given DISH access to their network for seven years while DISH builds their own 5G network. This low-cost carrier provides plans at a fraction of the cost while providing you the same coverage.

We've broken it down for you below to see if Boost Mobile is the best MVNO for you.

Boost Mobile plans provide a good selection suitable for all budgets and needs, including unlimited data. Although we don't believe you truly need unlimited data. On average we only use around 3 - 5GB of data a month, so you can half your cell bill by only paying for what you need.

As a low-cost carrier, there's no contract and all plans include taxes and fees and unlimited talk and text. They also offer a monthly discount the longer you stay with them.

Horrible.

I have been without service for 2 weeks now and every time I contact them they say there are doing tower maintenance. For 2 straight weeks? Seriously??

No warning for "maintenance" shutoff areawide

Service disappeared early morning - no phone, text, internet. Finally got hold of someone at a Boost store, who told me they had performed routing "maintenance" that shut down access to all services until customers bring phones to a physical store to have the phones "upgraded." No warning that an entire geographical area was going to be cut off from service, and no message concerning what was happening or what their "fix" is. Unacceptable! If I have to go to a physical store, I might as well go to a competitor and switch my service.

Two useless phones and they keep my money.

I now have two useless phones and Boost Mobile has $325 of my money that I will never get back. I am retired and prefer a land line over a cell phone and only use my cell phone for emergencies. I have a pay-as-you-go phone that I originally bought from Virgin Mobile. My account is now with Boost Mobile because they bought Virgin Mobile. Over the years, I have built up a balance of about $295 because, under the Virgin Mobile agreement, I was paying them so much more than I was spending. Boost Mobile has reluctantly allowed former Virgin Mobile customers to keep their plans but has coaxed them to buy a standard Boost Mobile plan which, in my case, would increase my monthly payment by a factor of 7. Any plan change would irreversibly cancel the legacy plan and an upgrade to an iPhone or an Android smart phone would be incompatible with the legacy plan. My phone was getting old, so I bought a new phone from Boost Mobile. I found an inexpensive basic flip phone whose description didn't say anything about being Android or a smart phone, so I ordered it from the Boost Mobile web site. I used their web site to transfer my account to the new phone. At that point, my old phone stopped receiving phone calls and my new phone did not connect. I contacted Boost Mobile's customer service numerous times to try to solve the problem. After about a week and a half, they finally figured out that my new phone was indeed an Android smart phone, so it was incompatible with my payment plan. I used the Boost Mobile web site to transfer my number back to my old phone. It didn't work. I called customer service to find out what was wrong. I was told that the transaction had generated an error and that there was something wrong with my account. I then tried to return the flip phone to Boost Mobile. They said that I could not return it after 7 days, even though it was their fault that it took longer than seven days to diagnose the problem. They also refuse to unlock the phone and allow me to use it with another carrier until I use it with Boost Mobile for 12 months, but that would require upgrading to a more expensive plan that I don't want. Meanwhile, my old phone can only make outgoing phone calls, but not receive incoming files. Customer service says the problem is with a tower, but that is not consistent with the fact that the phone works in one direction or the fact that the problem started at the exact moment that I tried to transfer to my new phone.
