At a glance

  • Value for money: Not the cheapest, and can only really save you money when you buy multiple lines.
  • Coverage: Good coverage on the Verizon network.
  • Customer experience: Most customers complain about the customer service and that their service was good until Verizon took over.
  • Transparency: Doesn't clearly state the high-speed data cap for unlimited plans and refers you to their T&C's for different features on the plan.
  • Range of choice: They have a low, medium, and high data allowance option, but the range of cost choice isn't inline with other MVNOs.

Total by Verizon review: An in-depth analysis

Total by Verizon used to be a sub-brand of Tracfone until Verizon brought it out a couple of years ago.

Owned by Verizon, it operates on Verizon's 5G & 4G LTE wireless network without the steep price tag often associated with a Verizon plan. But while Total by Verizon offers promising deals, it's important for potential users to consider what they really need from their cell phone plan.

Although an MVNO, Total by Verizon doesn't offer the cheapest plans compared to other carriers, and you may experience lower data prioritization during peak times compared to direct Verizon customers.

In the Total by Verizon review below, I'll explore different aspects of the carrier, including plans, network, and customer service. Then, you can take all of that information and use it to make a truly well-informed decision on this prepaid carrier.

What is Total by Verizon?

Total by Verizon is an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) that's powered by the Verizon 5G & 4G LTE wireless network. This carrier is a branch of Tracfone, which was bought by Verizon in 2021. It used to be Total Wireless (Still with me? A bit convoluted, I know) and has been relaunched under the new moniker.

What makes Total by Verizon different?

One reason Total by Verizon plans stand out from competitors is their perks. The two upper-tier plans include dedicated hotspot data, free international calling to your choice of five countries, and Disney+ premium.

However, it's worth noting that when it comes to bundling things like streaming services with your plan, according to this 2023 JD Power report, the average monthly wireless cost is $157. By unbundling your phone from any unnecessary features, like Disney+, it's possible to get a single-line unlimited data plan for around $25-$30 a month with MVNOs.

How much does Total by Verizon cost?

Plans range from around $30 - $60 a month for a single line. The more you buy, the cheaper they are with their multi-line discount.

Is Total by Verizon a good value?

Total by Verizon plans offer solid value if the extras are your jam. The one downside (you knew it was coming) is that there is no premium data. That means that any time the network is congested, you could experience slowdowns due to deprioritization.

That said, it's still a good deal compared to buying directly from Verizon, and there is a small selection of plans that offer options for low or heavy-data users. But there are prepaid phone plans from other low-cost carriers that could save you up to $600 a year per line.

Total by Verizon features

My viewpoint: Is Total by Verizon any good?

Short answer: Total by Verizon is an MVNO that's owned by Verizon and operates on its network. Its plans are pretty beefy, with perks you don't normally see from these low-cost carriers. The fact that Verizon owns the network means you can cut costs while maintaining dependable service. However, the plans are not the cheapest available from MVNOs, and there are a number of terms & conditions. As there's no such thing as one perfect carrier or plan that fits every user, we've analyzed a wide variety to help you figure out the best option for your needs.

Is Total by Verizon worth it?

The first thing you see on the Total by Verizon website is a low monthly price, but it's only if you purchase 4 lines. Reminding me quickly that Verizon owns this carrier.

Total by Verizon could be a good option if you want prepaid Verizon service without the price. However, there are plenty of other MVNO plans that could save you up to $600 a year.

I'm also not keen on paying extra for bundling services with my phone, as I like to have more control over these features. And I don't like the lack of transparency for the high-speed data limit on their unlimited plans.

Total by Verizon also has very limited international features. Depending on the plan, you get international calls to Mexico & Canada, or you can choose from 5 countries on the unlimited plans. But make sure to read the fine print for all the additional terms that come with this. There is also no international roaming allowed outside of Mexico & Canada.

Would I use Total by Verizon?

Short answer: Total by Verizon offers some good multi-line discounts, and for the unlimited plans, you also get Disney+ as part of the bundle. However, I like to keep my bundles separate, so I have more control over the costs, and if I need to cancel anything, I'm not tied in. Also, for a single-line plan, the costs are much more expensive than other low-cost carriers, so although the multi-line discounts look good, I can save even more with plans for the family with carriers like Tello or Mint Mobile.

Total by Verizon FAQs

Recap: Is Total by Verizon the best cell phone plan?

While Total by Verizon positions itself as an affordable gateway to Verizon's network through prepaid plans, the competitive landscape of MVNOs offers even greater savings, with some alternatives offering up to $600 in annual savings compared to Total by Verizon.

If you're looking for multiple lines, you can get a decent monthly price with this carrier's plans. But I would recommend thinking about whether you want to tie in a Disney+ subscription with your phone bill.

Although no single carrier or plan is ideal for everyone, this prepaid carrier could be an effective solution for a variety of users. Here are a few things to consider before deciding if this carrier is right for you:

  • Plans: A small selection of plans, with a couple of options for low-data users and some unlimited plans. They don't offer as much value for money as other low-cost carriers.
  • Coverage: Wireless coverage is provided on the Verizon 5G & 4G LTE wireless network.
  • Phones: You can either bring your own phone or select from a range of new devices.
  • Customer experience: There isn't a whole lot to go on since the carrier rebranded. Some say it's not been the same since Verizon took over, while others enjoy the service.
  • Features: A variety of features are available, but international options are very slim. They also include a Disney+ subscription on the unlimited data plans.
