Optimum Mobile review: An in-depth analysis

You've got a dizzying selection of choices available when it comes to wireless providers. This can make selecting the right one for your needs a daunting task.

I've reviewed over 30 carriers and narrowed down the field to help save you time in choosing the best plan for you and your family.

I've summarized all the details you need to know, including its plans, network coverage, and customer feedback, so you can decide if this carrier is right for you.

What is Optimum Mobile?

Optimum Mobile is the rebrand of Altice Mobile. This MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) runs on the T-Mobile network, providing reliable coverage for less than a plan direct from T-Mobile.

What makes Optimum Mobile different?

Optimum Mobile plans to stand out from its competitors with affordable unlimited data and access to over 2 million Wi-Fi hotspots across the service area.

Unlike most cable TV and internet providers who have branched into the mobile industry, Optimum doesn't require its subscribers to have an internet plan.

However, you will pay a $ 20-a-month surcharge per line if you don't subscribe to the internet, so it's definitely a better deal to go with the bundle.

How does Optimum Mobile compare to T-Mobile?

T-Mobile vs Optimum Mobile comparison

Keep your T-Mobile phone, number & coverage: Save $360 per year

Carrier Network Coverage 4G/5G Data Price Annual Cost
T-Mobile T-Mobile 4G & 5G Unlimited $75/mo $900/yr
Optimum Mobile T-Mobile 4G & 5G Unlimited $45/mo $540/yr

How much does Optimum Mobile cost?

Monthly rates range from $15-$50 a month for a single line. There is a discount for additional lines on the unlimited plans. The cost per line decreases after 2+ lines and drops even further for 5 lines.

With four different plans available, there's an Optimum Mobile plan to fit most peoples' needs. Low-data users can opt for 1 GB or 3 GB plans. High-data users can go for one of two unlimited data options, 20GB or 50GB.

Is Optimum Mobile a good value?

This plan offers good value for the company's internet customers, who receive a $20 discount per line. That bundle price, combined with a multi-line discount, could potentially save you a significant amount compared to T-Mobile's own plan while still enjoying the same coverage.

The plans are straightforward and budget-friendly if you're a low-data user, multi-line subscriber, and current internet customer. If you don't fall into these categories, it could be wise to look into some other better value phone plans before making the decision.

The FCC collects coverage data, which only offers an approximate indication and doesn't account for indoor coverage. The actual speed and performance can vary depending on your location and device. The reception you experience is influenced by local conditions and elements like natural and artificial physical features in your area.

Customer service

Does Optimum Mobile have good customer service?

We all hope for a flawless customer service experience. The reality is that customer service experiences vary significantly from person to person, depending on the situation.

The Optimum Mobile Trustpilot rating is average, but since the mobile division is newer, there isn't enough data to draw an accurate picture.

It's worth noting that the cable TV and internet side of the business didn't fare well with customer support ratings.

Our customer reviewers rate it a bit lower than average, and the BBB reflects a poor rating, again based on the overall company.

Optimum Mobile features

My viewpoint - Is Optimum Mobile any good?

Short answer: Optimum Mobile is a branch of Optimum Cable. They use the T-Mobile 5G and 4G LTE wireless networks to bring you the same coverage at an affordable rate. You're only eligible for its lowest cell phone rates if you're an Optimum Internet customer, but it's not required. If you're a low-data user or need multiple lines, you could save up to 50% on your mobile expenses. I've carefully assessed all the options to help you choose the best one for your needs, as there is no one carrier that is perfect for everyone.

Is Optimum Mobile worth it?

Only consider choosing Optimum Mobile plans if you are looking to streamline your internet and cell phone bill. The pricing is competitive when bundled, and it operates on one of the largest and fastest networks in the country.

By taking advantage of the carrier's T-Mobile coverage, you'll get comparable service and drastically reduce your monthly cell phone bill. J.D. Power reports that the average monthly cost for cellphone service is around $157, which adds up to over $1800 per year.

The cost of mobile services is on the rise and will continue increasing unless consumers send a message to the major wireless companies by switching away to alternative carriers.

Should I use Optimum Mobile?

Short answer: Since I have Optimum Internet, the thought has crossed my mind. However, even with the $20/month discount per line, the math doesn't make sense for my family. I typically use more than 3GB but less than 20GB, so they don't currently have a plan that fits my needs. I also find that the more services you bundle, the more room there is for confusion, hidden fees, and price hikes. I recommend keeping your services separate.

How we reviewed Optimum Mobile

To select the best carriers and plans, MoneySavingPro's team of experts evaluated over 30 different carriers.

Carriers were rated in five categories, with a star rating from 1-5, with 5 stars being the best. We then calculate the overall star rating using the five categories:

  1. Value for money: We compare carriers based on price, features, benefits, and promotions. It's not just about the lowest price but getting the most bang for your buck.
  2. Coverage: We look at network 5G and 4G LTE coverage across the US. We use coverage maps to determine service availability and data speeds in urban, suburban, and rural locations.
  3. Customer experience: We take into account items such as current user experience, website and app usability, ease of switching, and customer service in terms of availability, channels, and satisfaction ratings.
  4. Transparency: We assess whether carrier pricing is clear and straightforward. We examine the fine print to check for hidden fees, confusing terms or conditions, and misleading offers to ensure upfront, honest prices and advertising.
  5. Range of choice: We evaluate the diversity of plan options to determine if they fit the individual needs of all customers.
