How to switch to Mint Mobile

Switching to Mint is super simple. You can do it in three easy steps.

  1. Choose a plan with Mint. The more months you buy, the more money you save.

  2. Prepare to make the switch. Make sure old bills are paid and your phone is unlocked.

  3. Set up your new plan. Keep your current carrier account open until your number has ported over. Once you're sure your new plan is up and running, cancel your old one. If you've opted for a new device, it should come ready to go. If you're bringing your own phone, you'll need to follow the instructions with your new Mint Mobile SIM card. They'll send this to you in the post.

Bring your own phone to Mint Mobile

Mint Mobile will simply provide you with a prepaid SIM card. You pop it into your cell phone and follow the provider's instructions. You need an unlocked phone (meaning your carrier has released it for use on another network). You can check that your phone is compatible with Mint Mobile before you sign up and the rest is a breeze.

Just make sure you don't cancel your current phone plan until you've ported your phone number over to the new carrier.

Long time customer, coverage is now terrible!

I used Mint Mobile for years and the coverage in my area grew progressively worse to the point that I could only rely on wifi. The data coverage is awful and all of the hours trouble shooting with mint mobile techs accomplished nothing. They even sent me a new sim card, nothing worked. I was initially happy with the price and decent coverage but it's garbage now and of course they won't prorate a refund. So I've paid for an entire year for two phone plans that essentially only work on wifi. This is bad business. I paid upfront for a service that is no longer working properly because MINT has not upheld their side of the contract. I will not be renewing these plans. Not even Ryan Reynolds can change my mind!

NIGHTMARE: Stay away from

They gave me a phone that would not connect to their network. After talking with people who barely spoke English, I was given the runaround and filled out the same menus on my phone. Eventually one of the foreigners I talked to said I needed a new SIM card. They never bothered to tell me that I would be paying for it, so I installed a second SIM card, and the phone still wouldn't connect to their network. Now I wanted a full refund. So-and-so from India gave me a number and said it would be processed. When I called back the next day, there was supposedly no refund processed and I had to fill out a form online. I filled out the form, and they eventually told me I had requested a replacement phone, instead of a refund, even though I made clear countless times on the phone, in e-mails, and on their forms I wanted my money back. They're blaming the victim here, saying I have a perfectly good phone, which they're returning to me against my objections, and that I simply "put the SIM card in wrong." I happen to have an advanced degree and am no fool. The phone makes clear when it detects the card and when it's missing. I filed a complaint with the BBB, the federal government, and have my credit card company disputing their charges. I paid upfront for a phone and the service for a year ($500) and have nothing to show for it. Ryan Reynolds charisma does not make up for the fact this is an unethical company with argumentative customer reps, and a broken set-up, where the hand doesn't know what the foot is doing, to the point that anyone feels insane after dealing with them for a few days, and they blame the customer when their phones don't connect to their network.

Not reliable

Loved them at first. Had no issues. Over past 2 weeks have lost service completely on three different days. I lost total service this afternoon around 3:30pm and we're still out. It's 10:20pm now. Online chat closed and can't call customer service because I don't have phone service
