The Charter company started in 1993 and it has grown to become the fourth largest cable provider in the United States. They currently operate in 28 states and its headquarters is in Stamford, CT.
Features of Charter Services
The TV package that Charter offers presents more channels than some of its competitors. Charter's lowest price package, which includes Internet, TV, and phone, offers 125+ channels, and their best package offers 200+ Free HD channels. The programs can be seen anywhere in your home and on whatever device you want.
The Spectrum DVR service is free with all of their best packages, called Triple Play, and they include TV, Internet, and phone. The DVR can store up to 780 hours of movies or shows that you can replay when you want.
When it comes to viewing movies, there are over 10,000 of them that can be seen with their On Demand program. More than 5,000 of them are free, and more than 1,500 are in HD. These movies can be downloaded and then viewed on your mobile devices whenever you want, and an Internet connection will not be needed. Some movies can be seen in 3-D. Pay-per-view events are also available.
The top Charter TV packages have added EPIX programs to their package. EPIX is a joint venture between Charter and Lionsgate and Metro Goldwin Mayer, and it adds thousands of movies to the list.
The only Internet speed they offer is at 60 mbps, even on their best packages. This certainly should be fast enough for most homes, as long as only a few devices are being used at the same time. There are no data caps for Internet usage. Charter provides a router that is high performance, and it will cover all the rooms in your home and give you excellent speed.
For their phone service, an unlimited number of calls can be made nationwide, as well as long-distance calls to Canada, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. 18 different phone features come with the plan, including 3-way calling, voicemail, readable voicemail, call forwarding, blocking unwanted calls, caller ID, and more. It also comes with a battery backup to ensure your phone service will work even when there is a power outage. They also want their customers to know that there are no extra fees involved on their phone services, like those found with many phone companies today.
Along with your package, Charter will give their customers a Security Suite, which keeps your system safe. It offers protection from viruses and spam, and helps prevent hackers from breaking into your emails. Parental controls also come with it, letting you block certain types of websites according to category, age, and the time of day. This system can be installed on up to 10 different computers.
Charter also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on its services. This is rare in this industry. They also say that you do not need to buy any expensive equipment because they provide it for you.
If you have problems, the company provides videos and articles online for you. They also have dedicated support teams that are available 24/7.
One really unique feature of the Charter company is that they are willing to buy out any existing contract you have with another cable or Internet company. They claim to be willing to pay up to $500 so that you can get free of your existing contract and get signed up with them. The primary qualification is that you need to be caught up on your payments with the other company. The price is for any early termination fees that may apply after you drop the other company's services.
Another excellent feature that many people are sure to love is that their various program options do not require a contract. Customers do not have to get locked into a contract for a year or more. This should greatly encourage many people to seriously consider this company.
For a limited time, Charter will provide you with a free DVR and free DVR service. It is available for up to four TVs and can record up to eight shows at the same time. Besides playing the shows, viewers can also pause and rewind them, even on live shows.
Charter Spectrum calls itself "The Fastest Internet," and yet they only offer a 60 mbps Internet speed. While this is faster than some of the others, it certainly is not the fastest. They further try to prove they are the fastest by saying that they are 20 times faster than DSL. While 60 mbps is a good speed, it is a far cry from being the fastest. Other providers can deliver 500 mbps or more, which will make 60 mbps seem slow. It certainly is not the fastest. On the positive side, however, it does seem probable that most other companies will not deliver that kind of Internet speed for an equal or lower price.
The website says repeatedly that even greater speeds are available, but nowhere does it show what they are or what the prices might be. This has to make you wonder if they really want to sell you those higher speeds, or if it might be so expensive that they don't want to shock you. The company does offer services to businesses, and it may be on a price for businesses.
Verdict - Good
The Charter company looks like it provides great speed for a home where only 2 to 4 devices may be used simultaneously. The speeds certainly are excellent and its services look overall good. If you live in one of the 28 states it services, its prices are good, too. An outstanding feature is its willingness to provide a "No Contract" basis for many people who are tired of getting stuck with a service that does not do justice for what is expected. Charter is even willing to pay for you to switch, and they seem to be about the only one doing this.
