Verizon FiOS Internet
Verizon Fios is probably the fastest internet there is with its speedy fiber optic network. As can be expected, consumer reviews indicate that customers were largely blown away by the impressive speeds and reliable service. However, consumers were disappointed by the less than stellar customer service. Fios also has an incredibly limited area of availability and can only be obtained if you live in Florida, Texas, California, New York, or a few other east coast states. Another negative is that fact that they only provide security and parental controls as an add-on, while their competitors provide it for free.
Benefits of Verizon Fios
As an internet service provider, the Verizon Fios company is very serious about offering Internet speeds that people want. Their lowest speed is at 50 Mbps, and the fiber-optic cable enables the upload speed to be the same as the download speed with each of their packages. After the basic speed of 50 Mbps, other package speeds are 100, 150, 300, and 500 Mbps. Because of the fiber optic cable that Fios runs on, the company claims that you will never have to be worried about having any program buffering, giving you interruption free ability to watch your favorite movies or shows. At speeds of 100 Mbps or higher, as many as seven HD videos can be streamed simultaneously.
When it comes to TV plans, Verizon's Fios is once again unique. It lets you start out with a basic package of 30 channels, and then you get to select additional channels to customize your own TV package. Packages come in types of shows, such as Sports, Entertainment, Kids, Lifestyle, etc. When you buy the TV program, you get to choose two additional packs. Then, if you want an even greater variety, for $10 each, you can choose one or more. A downloadable app lets customers watch TV right away on their smartphone or tablet. Their best TV package offers 435+ standard channels, and another 140+ HD channels.
The Quantum TV DVD player/recorder has a lot of storage capability on it. You can record up to 200 hours on it of HD shows, and it is possible to record as many as 12 different shows at the same time. The multi-room DVR can play a different program on up to 10 different TVs, and users have many options with the shows they watch, such as recording, fast-forward, pause, or even rewinding a show.
Verizon Fios knows how much people like to watch TV. Their On Demand program, called Flex View, lets customers buy, rent, and download movies to any connected device. There are more than 130,000 movies and shows available through their On Demand service.
Although Verizon offers two-year plans like other companies, it is one of the few that offers a no-contract plan. It guarantees that the price will stay the same for one year. It is a package for Internet – with speeds of 50 Mbps, custom TV, and phone.
When you buy a plan that includes phone service, you get a lot of excellent options – more than 20 of them. Being able to make an unlimited number of calls within the United States is just for starters. Then, you also can block up to 100 numbers, get caller ID, and can even block your number from showing up on other phones when you call. Package includes voice mail and caller ID.
There are also a couple of phone plans that are just for phone service. The low-cost option also uses the fiber-optic network, giving you crystal clear voice. Users pay a flat fee and then there is a per minute charge. It has no long distance monthly phone charges. The other pure phone service, which costs about three times more, offers unlimited calls, local and long distance, throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Voice mail is delivered through email, and about 20 other phone features. This plan currently comes with $50 off per month for the first 12 months. A back-up battery is also available.
There really are a lot of positive benefits offered by Verizon Fios. Their speeds are excellent, and the fact that fiber optics almost totally eliminates any serious Internet slowdowns is hard to beat. The Wi-Fi device that they offer, the Fios Gateway, enables users to pick up its signals as far away as 325 feet. It also has a guest Wi-Fi, letting your guests use your home's Internet without slowing yours down, and without the need to give them the password.
At the present time, Fios offers a $400 Visa Prepaid card when you buy a two-year plan that includes Internet, TV, and phone service. Buyers of one of these plans also get all the premium movie channels for 12 months. The Visa card is issued after 90 days of ordering. In addition to the Visa card, those who buy one of the top three plans also get $50 to $55 off each month for the first twelve months. People who buy their lowest plan receive $40 off for the first twelve months. Another special offer that is available for a limited time is the waiving of the standard $80 set up charge.
With all of the options and speeds that Verizon FiOs offers, it really is hard to find anything negative about their programs or services. Not only is it hard to imagine some kind of problem, but it is also hard to imagine what they might add to make it any better, except to lower their cost.
One negative aspect is that at the present time the Verizon Home Services are only available in about 12 states, including: California, Connecticut, Delaware, District Of Columbia, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, and Virginia. Aside from that, some of their prices seem to be a little higher than competitor's prices, but with stable Internet speeds that do not need to buffer, even during peak usage hours, it sounds like it could be worth it for those who don't like interruptions and want good speeds all the time.
Verdict - Very Good
Despite its small service area and limited extra options, Verizon FiOS has the speed and options that's hard to beat. If you find that it is offered in your area it is definitely one to consider.
