Prepaid plans are great if you know how much you use your cell each month. Pay in advance for a set amount of talk, text and data. Avoid an unpleasant bill-shaped surprise at the end of the month. Tello operates on the T-Mobile network and in their own words, their plans are crazy affordable. We absolutely agree.

Check Carrier Coverage

No contract phone plan benefits

By switching to a Mobile Virtual Network Operator, or MVNO, you're giving yourself a ton of freedom. Freedom to switch whenever you want, freedom from contracts, and financial freedom. It's just a few of the reasons why we love them.

Want to stay on the same network, keep your phone and number, get more flexibility and save your money? No contract plans from smaller carriers give you all this, and more.

Whether you're looking for coverage from T-Mobile, AT&T or Verizon's network, you'll be able to find this with an alternative carrier. The cheap cell phone plans they provide include everything you need.

  • Same great nationwide coverage: Operating on the very same networks as the big guys, alternative cell phone carriers give you the coverage you can rely on.

  • Much lower prices: Save up to $600 per year on your cell phone plan. How come MVNOs are cheaper? They don't have the huge overhead and advertising costs the big guys do.

  • No contracts: You can forget getting stuck in a two-year agreement. You decide when to switch carriers with a no contract phone plan.

  • Same cell phone service: You may be paying less, but this doesn't mean you're sacrificing great features. You can find unlimited everything plans easily. Usually, a no contract cell phone plan comes with unlimited talk and text as standard, high speed data, and mobile hotspot data features.

  • Keep your phone and number: Bring your own phone, keep your phone number and cut out pricey device payments.

  • Customize your plan: There's a huge amount of choice. Decide how much data you need, opt for unlimited or no data, unlimited data plans come at a much better price with an alternative carrier. Choose to pay as you go, minimal minutes, or unlimited talk text and data. You can pick a plan to fit your budget and your usage - not one your carrier says you need.

  • Great customer support: Happy customers are what smaller mobile providers want. And they're known for giving them their full attention. You can forget feeling like an anonymous number, lost in the crowd. Check our carrier user reviews before switching.

No contract phone plan features

  • 4G LTE data speeds: MVNOs operate on the big cellular networks, so you pay less without sacrificing speed. As the big networks roll out 5G, more smaller carriers are able to offer 5G coverage too. So you can expect the same high-speed data.

  • Unlimited talk and text messaging: It's never been easier to find a new unlimited plan. Pretty much all no contract carriers include unlimited text and calls as standard with plans. Compare cheap talk and text plans with or without data.

  • International calls to Canada and Mexico: Keeping in touch with loved ones around the world has never felt more important, making international calling a must-havefeature. Luckily MVNOs offer some of the best international phone plans, including free calling to countries like Canada and Mexico, plus discounted rates or affordable add ons for other countries.

  • Multiline discounts: If you're used to your multi-line plan, low-cost carriers have got you. They offer the cheapest family cell phone plans out there. With many, you'll get a multi-line discount for each line addded.

  • Wi-Fi calling: If you're stuck for signal, or out of your service area when out and about, you can still make calls using this feature. With this feature calls are made over the internet instead of your cellular connection.

  • Tethering/hotspot data: Many low-cost carriers allow you to turn your phone into a hotspot and get another device online. Pick an MVNO with the best mobile hotspot plans and share your mobile hotspot data with other devices.

  • HD video streaming: Just like the big guys, some of these alternative carriers offer HD video streaming and some don't. Our articles cover which features do and don't come with a plan.

No contract plan types

  • Unlimited plans: Most no contract plans will come with unlimited talk and text as standard. And unlimited data? Alternative carriers have got you covered. Data hungry users looking for unlimited plus plans will save serious money switching to an MVNO alternative. Check out some of the cheapest unlimited data plans out there. And if you're not sure how much data you need we've got a data usage calculator.

  • Basic plans: Only use a cell phone to make a few calls, send a couple of messages and rarely go online? Opt for a simply prepaid plan. You get basic cell phone functions, an allowance for minutes of talk, and around 2GB of data. If you run out of anything, it's usually very easy to add on more.

  • Family plans: If you're used to a plan giving you four lines or more, most MVNOs also offer group plans. Compare the cheapest family phone plans.

  • Bring your own device plans: BYOD plans are the norm with smaller carriers. Compare cell phone prices and get a great deal to go with your cheap cell phone plan.

  • Single line plans: You don't have to pay a premium rate for one line. In fact, people switching from a multi line plan find it's cheaper to switch to single line plans from an MVNO. Find the best phone plans for individuals.

  • Talk and text only plans: Do you (or a loved one) need a basic phone plan? If you don't need data, these plans are ideal. Compare cheap talk and text plans and save a ton of money opting out of data.

  • Tablet plans: It's not just no contract cell phone plans you'll find from these carriers. Find the cheapest data plan for your tablet or iPad.

  • Kids plans: MVNOs offer the best phone plans for kids. You can manage the plan to include exactly what you want your child to have.

  • Senior plans: Senior citizens often have different cell phone needs. Compare cheap cell phone plans for seniors and find the perfect match.

How to find the best no contract phone plan

After comparing all these no contract carriers you're still not sure, we're here to make choosing a seamless. There's no one size fits all when it comes to a no contract phone plan, but there are things you can look at to find the best fit for you.

  • Cost: Set a limit for how much do you want to spend each month, then find a plan to suit that. MVNOs offer a variety of cheap plans that still provide the same benefits you'll find from the big guys.

  • Call & text usage: First things first, ask what you need from a cell phone plan. Basic plans are great if you rarely your device, maybe you make a few calls and send a limited number of text messages a month. Perhaps you have loved ones abroad? There's a load of international options, such as unlimited international calling. Some carriers will include as many as 200 countries, including Mexico and Canada.

  • Data usage: Most plans from the major carriers offer unlimited data, but it's worth checking your usage first. Most people use 3 to 5GB of data a month. Set data plans give you the financial freedom to only pay for what you need. Decide if it's necessary to have unlimited everything, or if you can go for a set amount of data and save more.

  • Compare plans: If totally unlimited is the way for you to go, Ting, Tello, and Pure Talk all offer great unlimited data plans. Always be sure to check how much data you're really getting. Unlimited doesn't mean unlimited. It means a lot. You'll usually get around 15 GB of high speed data. Once you've burned through your data allotment that, you get unlimited data at 2G speeds.

How to switch to a cheaper no contract phone plan

It's easy to switch carriers. Let's break it down into three simple steps.

  1. Customize your plan. Choose a plan to suit your cell phone needs.

  2. Prepare to make the switch. Pay old bills and get your phone unlocked.

  3. Set up your new plan. Keep your current account open until your number has ported over. Once you're sure your new plan is up and running, cancel the old one. New devices will come ready to go and transferring data from one to another is usually seamless. If you're bringing your own phone you'll need to follow the instructions with the SIM card kit that will be sent to you in the post.

Bring your own phone & save

Who doesn't love simple? The great thing about MVNOs is that switching carriers and keeping your own device is just that. Simple.

You need an unlocked phone, so your current carrier will have released it for use on another network. Once you've checked with your new provider about phone compatibility the rest is a breeze.

Most low-cost carriers simply provide you with a prepaid SIM card. Pop it into your phone and follow the instructions. Make sure you don't cancel your current phone plan until you've ported your phone number over to the new carrier to avoid any hitches and hurdles.
